The Humidity Deception
We spend all of summer battling sweat, sun tans, and dehydration, so the arrival of the monsoon feels like a blessing. But while the temperature drops, the humidity skyrockets, creating a unique and challenging environment for our skin. Unlike the dry
heat of summer, which primarily saps moisture and requires constant replenishment, high humidity does the opposite. It envelops the skin in a damp blanket, which might sound hydrating but actually signals your pores to go into overdrive. This excess moisture in the air mixes with your skin’s natural oils and sweat, creating a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. Your skin barrier, which works hard to keep irritants out, can become overwhelmed and compromised, leading to a host of issues that don't typically surface during hot, dry spells.
From Glow to Grease
The most immediate effect of high humidity is the shift from a healthy glow to a greasy sheen. Your sebaceous glands work overtime to produce oil, but the moisture-laden air prevents sweat and oil from evaporating as they normally would. This sticky mixture sits on your skin’s surface, attracting dirt and pollutants. The result? Clogged pores, blackheads, and a sudden surge in acne breakouts, even for those with typically dry or normal skin. This phenomenon is often dubbed 'monsoon acne'. Furthermore, the constant dampness can encourage fungal infections, leading to itchy, red patches in skin folds. Your skin can also appear dull and lifeless, as the excess oil and dead skin cells form a layer that prevents light from reflecting evenly.
Adapt Your Cleansing Routine
The first line of defence is to adjust how you wash your face. That creamy, nourishing cleanser you loved in the winter or even summer might feel too heavy now. Switch to a gentle, gel-based, or foaming cleanser that can effectively cut through the grease without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Look for ingredients like salicylic acid if you’re prone to breakouts, as it helps exfoliate inside the pores. Cleansing twice a day is non-negotiable. Consider double-cleansing in the evening, starting with an oil-based cleanser to dissolve makeup, sunscreen, and grime, followed by your water-based cleanser to wash it all away. This ensures your skin is truly clean before you apply any nighttime products.
Rethink Your Moisturiser
It’s a common myth that oily or acne-prone skin doesn't need moisturiser, especially in a humid climate. Skipping this step can backfire, as dehydrated skin may produce even more oil to compensate. The key is not to skip moisturiser, but to choose the right one. Put away the heavy creams and opt for something lightweight and non-comedogenic (meaning it won’t clog pores). Gel-based or water-based moisturisers are your best friends during the monsoon. They provide essential hydration without adding to the feeling of stickiness. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which draws moisture into the skin, or niacinamide, which helps regulate oil production and strengthen the skin barrier.
Exfoliate, But Gently
With dead skin cells and excess oil building up faster than usual, exfoliation becomes crucial. However, this isn't an invitation to scrub your face with harsh, gritty products. Over-exfoliating can irritate the skin and damage its protective barrier. Instead, incorporate gentle chemical exfoliants into your routine 2-3 times a week. Products containing Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) like glycolic or lactic acid work on the skin’s surface to dissolve dead cells, while Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) like salicylic acid penetrate deeper to clear out pores. A weekly clay mask can also work wonders to absorb excess oil and purify the skin.
Don't Forget Sunscreen
Cloudy skies can be deceptive. Up to 80 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate clouds, meaning sunscreen is just as important in the monsoon as it is on a bright summer day. The challenge is finding one that doesn't feel like a heavy, greasy mask on your skin. Look for lightweight, gel-based, or fluid sunscreens with a 'matte finish'. A broad-spectrum formula with at least SPF 30 is essential to protect your skin from sun damage, premature ageing, and pigmentation, allowing your other skincare products to work more effectively.
