Indian Railways has officially flagged off the much-anticipated Vande Bharat Sleeper Express between Bengaluru and Mumbai, marking a significant leap in overnight train travel. This new service promises to redefine comfort and speed on a key route.
A New Era for Overnight Journeys
The
launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express between two of India's major economic hubs, Bengaluru and Mumbai, represents more than just a new train on the tracks. Flagged off by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on November 1, this service is set to transform the overnight travel experience. Unlike its chair-car siblings, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is designed specifically for long-distance comfort, merging the platform's famed semi-high-speed capabilities with the necessity of a good night's rest. This move signals a strategic expansion of the Vande Bharat network, which previously included sleeper services on routes like Howrah-Guwahati and Varanasi-New Delhi. The new train aims to provide a premium, faster, and more comfortable alternative to existing services, catering to business travellers, families, and tourists alike.
The Route and a Radically Reduced Travel Time
One of the biggest advantages of the new service is the significant reduction in travel time. The train is scheduled to cover the distance between Bengaluru's Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) and Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in about 16 hours. This is a massive improvement compared to most existing trains on the route, which can take anywhere from 22 to over 24 hours. The regular service for train number 27652 departs from SMVT Bengaluru at 7:45 PM and arrives at CSMT Mumbai at 11:55 AM the next day. In the return direction, train number 27651 leaves Mumbai at 8:10 PM and reaches Bengaluru at noon the next day. The service will run six days a week, excluding Mondays from Bengaluru and Tuesdays from Mumbai. Key stoppages along the route include Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Raichur, and Guntakal, connecting major towns across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
Inside the State-of-the-Art Coaches
The Vande Bharat Sleeper isn't just faster; it's a complete upgrade in passenger experience. Each 16-coach trainset is designed to accommodate 823 passengers across three classes: AC First, AC 2nd Tier, and AC 3rd Tier. The interiors are designed with modern aesthetics and passenger comfort in mind. Berths are wider and feature better cushioning than conventional trains. Enhanced soundproofing promises a quieter journey, while fully sealed gangways keep the interiors dust-free. Each berth comes equipped with its own reading light and charging sockets, including both standard and USB ports. For added luxury, passengers in AC First Class will have access to hot water shower facilities. The train also features sensor based lighting in common areas and advanced bio vacuum toilets with touch free fittings to enhance hygiene.
Safety and Speed in Focus
Built for a maximum operational speed of 160 km/h, the Vande Bharat Sleeper combines speed with advanced safety features. Its self propelled design, with distributed power systems, allows for quicker acceleration and deceleration, contributing to the shorter travel time and better on time performance. Turnaround time at terminal stations is also reduced as there is no need to reverse a locomotive. On the safety front, the train is equipped with the indigenous Kavach Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS). It also features advanced fire detection systems, CCTV cameras for surveillance, and an emergency talk back system for passengers to communicate with the crew. The coaches are built with high grade, fire retardant materials, setting a new benchmark for safety in overnight rail travel.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper vs. The Rajdhani
For decades, the Rajdhani Express has been the gold standard for premium overnight travel in India. The Vande Bharat Sleeper is poised to challenge that legacy. While both can operate at similar top speeds, the Vande Bharat's EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) design gives it an edge in acceleration, reducing overall journey time. The interior amenities, from the berth design and lighting to the advanced toilet systems and soundproofing, are a clear step up. However, the fare structure for the Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to be at a premium compared to the Rajdhani, reflecting the enhanced features and speed. Furthermore, booking rules are stricter, with no provision for RAC or waitlisted tickets, ensuring only confirmed berths are sold. This new train offers a trade off : a higher price for a significantly faster , more modern , and comfortable journey.
