The Rise of Convenience and Concern
Quick-commerce platforms have fundamentally changed urban life in India. Running out of milk, spices, or snacks no longer requires a trip to the store; a few taps on a smartphone brings them to your doorstep, often in under 10 minutes. This unparalleled
convenience has led to explosive growth. However, this speed-focused model is now facing a trust deficit. Recent reports highlight a surge in consumer complaints about the quality and safety of products delivered. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently issued multiple notices to a major platform, Swiggy Instamart, after receiving complaints about the delivery of expired, spoiled, and contaminated goods. These incidents, ranging from rotten eggs to expired protein powder and even unsafe infant food, have left many customers wondering if the promise of speed is coming at the cost of safety.
Know the Risks: What Are People Complaining About?
The concerns are not isolated. Consumers across platforms have reported a variety of issues that point to potential gaps in the supply chain. The most common complaints involve receiving products past their expiry date. Another major issue is improper storage. Perishable items like dairy, meat, and frozen goods require strict temperature control, and customers have reported receiving melted ice cream or spoiled milk. Other red flags include damaged or tampered packaging, which can compromise the food's integrity, and receiving fresh produce that is bruised, mouldy, or of poor quality. FSSAI's notices also highlighted issues with incorrect or non-existent FSSAI licences for sellers listed on the platforms, making it difficult to trace the origin of a problematic product.
Your First Line of Defence: The Pre-Order Checklist
Being a vigilant consumer starts before you even place an order. First, don't just rely on the platform; check the ratings and reviews for the specific seller or 'dark store' fulfilling your order, if possible. Pay attention to comments about freshness and expiry dates. Before committing to a platform, familiarise yourself with its return and refund policy. How does it handle complaints about spoiled food? Is it a simple refund, or is there a more robust process? Some platforms allow you to leave notes for the shopper; use this to specify preferences, such as “please select vegetables without bruises” or “ensure dairy products have a long expiry date.” Finally, FSSAI regulations require e-commerce platforms to display the FSSAI license number of the sellers, which adds a layer of accountability.
The Critical Moment: Inspecting Your Delivery
The moment your order arrives is the most critical checkpoint. Don't just accept the bag and put it away. Take a minute to conduct a quick inspection. Check the temperature of cold items; they should feel cold to the touch. For packaged goods, immediately look for the manufacturing and expiry dates. FSSAI guidelines state that delivered food should have a reasonable shelf-life remaining. Examine the seals on items like milk cartons, jars, and snack packets to ensure they haven't been broken. For fresh fruits and vegetables, give them a quick visual check for any signs of spoilage. This immediate check is your best opportunity to catch a problem and report it instantly.
What to Do When You Receive a Bad Order
If you find something wrong, act immediately. The first step is to document everything. Take clear photos of the spoiled item, the expiry date, the packaging, and your bill. Use the app's customer support or 'Help' section to file a complaint right away, attaching the photos as evidence. Most platforms have a short window for reporting issues. If the platform only offers a refund without addressing the safety concern, or if the response is unsatisfactory, you have further recourse. You can escalate the issue by filing a complaint with the National Consumer Helpline at 1915 or directly with the FSSAI through its portal. The Consumer Protection Act, 2019, considers the sale of stale or harmful food a violation of your rights.
