The Old Way vs. The New Convenience
For years, travelling with more than the permitted luggage allowance on Indian Railways meant arriving at the station hours in advance. The process involved finding the parcel office, getting the luggage weighed, filling out forms, and paying the fees—all
before the train's departure. This often led to last-minute panic and a stressful start to the trip. Recognizing this, Indian Railways has introduced a digital solution. A new online facility, which went live on July 31, 2026, allows passengers with confirmed tickets to declare and book their excess luggage from home. This service is designed to eliminate long queues, reduce paperwork, and ease congestion at railway stations.
Understanding Your Luggage Allowance
Before you book, it's crucial to know how much luggage you can carry for free. Indian Railways has specific weight allowances based on the class of travel. For AC First Class passengers, the free allowance is 70 kg. It's 50 kg for AC 2-Tier, 40 kg for AC 3-Tier and Sleeper Class, and 35 kg for Second Class. Anything beyond these limits is considered 'excess luggage' and is chargeable. There is also a maximum limit on how much total luggage can be carried in the passenger compartment, even with payment. For example, an AC First Class passenger can carry a maximum of 150 kg, while an AC 2-Tier passenger is capped at 100 kg. Notably, for AC 3-Tier, the free allowance of 40 kg is also the maximum limit.
How to Book Excess Luggage Online
The new process is designed to be straightforward. Passengers with a confirmed ticket can visit the official Indian Railways parcel website at www.parcel.indianrail.gov.in. There, you will need to enter your journey details, such as your PNR number, train number, and station names. You can then specify the details of your extra luggage. The portal will automatically calculate an estimated charge for the excess weight. After submitting the online application, you still need to present your luggage at the parcel office of your boarding station. However, the process is expedited as the initial declaration is already done. At the station, the luggage will be weighed for a final confirmation of charges. Once payment is made, you will receive a receipt, which is essential for collecting your baggage at the destination.
Calculating the Costs
The fee for excess luggage is calculated at 1.5 times the standard luggage rate. Charges are calculated in increments, with a minimum charge of ₹30. The total cost depends on both the weight of your excess baggage and the distance of your journey. While the online portal provides an estimate, the final amount is confirmed at the station's parcel office after the luggage is physically weighed. It is also important to note that carrying unbooked excess luggage can result in a penalty of up to six times the normal rate if discovered during the journey.
Important Things to Keep in Mind
While the online booking system simplifies things, a few rules remain critical. Your luggage must be securely packed; unpacked items will not be accepted. There are also size restrictions: trunks and suitcases should generally not exceed 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm to be carried in the compartment. Anything larger must be booked and transported in the separate brake van (SLR). Prohibited items, such as flammable materials, explosives, and acids, are strictly not allowed. This new online service is for personal luggage that travels with you in the same train, not for general parcel services where you send goods separately.
