Find the Booking Sweet Spot
The old advice was simply to book early, but savvy travellers know there's a 'sweet spot'. Booking too far in advance—more than four or five months—can mean you miss out on airline sales. For domestic festive travel in India, like for Diwali or Christmas,
the ideal window is generally 60 to 90 days before your departure date. During this period, airlines have released their promotional festive fares but the last-minute panic pricing has not yet kicked in. For international trips, aim to book three to four months ahead.
Make Technology Your Co-Pilot
Don't just search for a flight; track it. Use fare comparison tools like Skyscanner, Google Flights, or Kayak to see prices across multiple airlines and booking portals. More importantly, set up price alerts for your desired route. These free services will notify you via email or a push notification when the fare drops, allowing you to book at the optimal moment. Fares fluctuate constantly, and a price drop might only last a few hours. Acting fast on an alert can lead to significant savings.
Be Flexible With Dates and Times
If your schedule has some wiggle room, you can unlock major savings. Flying on the day of the festival itself, such as Christmas Day or the main day of Diwali, is often 20-40% cheaper than travelling in the frantic days just before. Most people want to arrive before the celebrations begin, leaving planes on the festival day relatively empty and fares lower. Similarly, mid-week flights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays are almost always cheaper than weekend departures. Even choosing an early morning or late-night flight can make a difference, as these less popular timings often come with lower prices.
Think Outside the Main Airport
Major metro airports are convenient but also the most expensive to fly into during peak season. If your final destination is accessible from multiple airports, check fares for all of them. For example, if travelling to the Delhi NCR region, it might be cheaper to fly into Jaipur and then take a train or cab. Similarly, for destinations in Punjab, check flights to Amritsar or Chandigarh. A flight with a layover can also be substantially cheaper than a direct one, especially on long-haul international routes.
Unlock the Power of Points and Rewards
Your everyday spending can help fund your festive travel. Many credit cards in India are co-branded with airlines or offer reward points that can be converted into air miles. By using these cards for your regular expenses, you can accumulate a significant number of points throughout the year, which can then be redeemed to pay for your festive flight tickets, either partially or in full. Check for special offers and transfer bonuses in the months leading up to the festive season to maximise the value of your points.
Mix, Match, and Get Creative
Don't assume a round-trip ticket with one airline is the cheapest option. Often, booking two separate one-way tickets on different airlines can result in a lower total cost. This 'mix-and-match' strategy gives you the flexibility to choose the cheapest departure and return flights independently. Also, consider 'open-jaw' tickets where you fly into one city and return from another. This is perfect for trips where you plan to travel between two cities, as it saves you the time and money of backtracking to your arrival airport.
