The End of a Four-Decade Run
For the first time since 1986, Indian Railways is replacing its core Passenger Reservation System (PRS). This is the backend system that has managed train bookings for nearly 40 years, evolving from counter-based services to supporting the massive volume
of online transactions seen today. With nearly 89% of all reserved tickets now booked online, the legacy infrastructure was due for a major upgrade to handle modern demands. The Ministry of Railways has announced that a new, state-of-the-art system, developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), began its phased rollout in August 2026. The primary goal is to make ticket booking faster, more reliable, and capable of handling significantly more traffic, especially during peak hours.
A Leap in Speed and Capacity
The most significant improvement is the sheer power of the new platform. The old PRS could handle around 32,000 ticket bookings per minute. The upgraded, cloud-based system is designed to process over 1.5 lakh bookings per minute — a nearly five-fold increase in capacity. This enhancement is aimed directly at reducing system crashes and slowdowns that frustrate passengers, particularly during the high-demand Tatkal booking window. Beyond bookings, the system's capacity for handling passenger enquiries, such as PNR status checks and seat availability, is expected to jump tenfold from 4 lakh to over 40 lakh enquiries per minute. This means quicker responses and a less stressful experience for millions of users trying to access information simultaneously.
Smarter Features for Passengers
The upgrade isn't just about raw power; it also brings smarter, more user-friendly features. One of the most touted is the AI-powered waitlist prediction tool. This feature, which was introduced earlier, has seen its accuracy improve from 53% to 94%, giving passengers a much more reliable estimate of their chances of getting a confirmed seat. This allows for better journey planning. The new system is also deeply integrated with the RailOne app, which consolidates services like booking, cancellations, live train status, and lodging complaints into a single platform. While the core booking process remains familiar, the transition is visible through the new IRCTC beta website, which launched on July 15 and already shows improved performance in booking speeds.
What Is a Phased Rollout?
The transition to the new PRS will not happen overnight. Railway officials have confirmed that the migration is happening in phases to avoid major disruptions. This means the new system will be progressively tested under varying levels of user traffic. Layer by layer, as the new platform proves its stability, more booking traffic will be shifted from the old system to the new one. Passengers may not notice a single, dramatic switch but rather a gradual improvement in performance and reliability on the IRCTC website and RailOne app. The Railway Ministry has emphasized its focus on ensuring a seamless transition without causing inconvenience to passengers.
How This Affects Your Booking
For most users, the booking process will feel more responsive rather than fundamentally different. The interface on the new IRCTC beta website has been updated for a cleaner look, but the steps for searching trains and entering passenger details remain largely the same. One notable change for those booking Tatkal tickets at physical counters is the introduction of a token system to manage queues more effectively. For online Tatkal bookings, Aadhaar authentication and OTP verification continue to be mandatory. The key takeaway for passengers is that the system behind their clicks is now far more robust.
