The Majestic Randha Falls
One of the most popular sights in Bhandardara, Randha Falls is a testament to nature's power. During the monsoon, the Pravara River plunges from a height of 170 feet into a spectacular gorge, creating a thunderous roar and a cloud of spray that blankets
the viewing area. It is a prime attraction for tourists, especially during the rainy season when the water flow is at its peak. The viewpoint offers a breathtaking panorama of the falls and the surrounding greenery, making it a perfect spot for photography and simply soaking in the raw beauty of the Western Ghats. It's an ideal location for a picnic with family or for some quiet, leisurely time amidst nature.
Wilson Dam and Arthur Lake
At the heart of Bhandardara's landscape is the colonial-era Wilson Dam, one of the oldest dams in India. When the dam's gates open during peak monsoon, the gushing water creates the famous Umbrella Falls, a unique spectacle where the water cascades over a semi-circular rock formation, resembling an umbrella. The dam impounds the Pravara River, forming the vast and serene Arthur Lake. Surrounded by the rugged Sahyadri hills, the lake is a tranquil spot perfect for boating or simply enjoying the sunset. The play of mist over the placid water on a rainy day creates a truly magical and unforgettable scene.
The Ancient Amruteshwar Temple
For a touch of history amidst the natural splendour, a visit to the Amruteshwar Temple is a must. Located in the quiet village of Ratanwadi, this temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is believed to be over 1,200 years old, built by the Shilahara dynasty. Constructed from intricately carved black stone in the Hemadpanti style of architecture, the temple stands as a remarkable piece of history. It's situated on the banks of the Pravara River and getting there can be an adventure in itself, often involving a boat ride across a section of Arthur Lake followed by a short walk. The temple’s serene atmosphere and detailed carvings offer a peaceful retreat from the world.
A Trek to Ratangad Fort
If adventure is what you seek, the trek to Ratangad Fort, also known as the 'Jewel of the Sahyadris', is an unmissable experience. This 2000-year-old fort stands at an elevation of over 4,255 feet, offering panoramic views of the Bhandardara region, including Arthur Lake and the Kalsubai range. The trek, which is of an easy to moderate difficulty level, takes you through dense forests and requires climbing a few iron ladders near the summit. The fort is famous for its natural rock peak with a cavity called 'Nedhe' or the 'Eye of the Needle'. During the post-monsoon season, the entire trail is often covered in vibrant yellow Sonki flowers, adding to the trek's charm.
Planning Your Weekend Escape
Bhandardara is easily accessible from major cities like Mumbai (around 165 km) and Pune, making it ideal for a two-day trip. The most common route is to drive via NH-160 to Ghoti and then take the state highway to Bhandardara. Alternatively, you can take a train to Igatpuri, the nearest railway station (45 km away), and then hire a local taxi to reach the hill station. Accommodation options range from resorts to local homestays. For the best experience of foggy hills and gushing waterfalls, plan your visit during the monsoon months from July to September. For trekking and clear views, the post-monsoon period from September to February is ideal.
