The Latest Blow: Sai Sudharsan
Top-order batter Sai Sudharsan has been officially ruled out of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka due to a toe injury. The left-hander, who was expected to be a key part of India's middle order, did not travel with the team to Sri Lanka. He
remained at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru for rehabilitation, hoping to join the squad later. However, reports confirmed that his recovery from a stress reaction in his right foot will take longer than anticipated, forcing him to miss the entire series. Sudharsan's absence is a significant blow, especially after his impressive back-to-back centuries for India A in Sri Lanka last month, and it creates a selection headache for the team management.
Jasprit Bumrah: The Spearhead's Struggle
India's pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, is another high-profile name on the injury list. He has been ruled out of the Sri Lanka Test series due to a left knee injury, specifically diagnosed as synovitis. Bumrah experienced discomfort while performing basic jogging and single-leg exercises during his rehabilitation at the CoE. The BCCI has not set a timeline for his return, prioritizing his long-term fitness over a hasty comeback. His absence leaves a massive void in India's bowling attack for the crucial World Test Championship series. Uncapped pacer Auqib Nabi has been named as his replacement in the squad.
Hardik Pandya: A Setback in Recovery
All-rounder Hardik Pandya is also at the CoE, recovering from a left quadriceps injury. While he was reportedly bowling at near full intensity, he suffered a fresh setback after complaining of pain in his right calf. While tests revealed no major damage, his running and bowling were temporarily halted as a precaution. He is expected to resume bowling drills soon, but his road to a full-strength return has been complicated. His fitness is crucial for India's balance, especially in white-ball formats.
Shubman Gill: A New Worry
Adding to the team's woes, captain Shubman Gill sustained an injury to his right ring finger during a practice session ahead of the warm-up match in Colombo. As a precautionary measure, he did not take the field on the first day of the practice game, with KL Rahul stepping in to lead the side. While the BCCI medical team is monitoring his progress, any significant injury to the captain and premier opening batter would be a major disruption for the touring side.
The Long-Term Absentees
Beyond the immediate concerns for the Sri Lanka tour, several other key players are in different stages of rehabilitation. Mohammed Shami has been out of international action since March 2025 following major ankle surgery. Though he has performed exceptionally in domestic cricket, the selectors remain cautious about his readiness for the rigours of Test cricket. Rishabh Pant, who made his comeback to competitive cricket earlier this year after a long layoff, is currently with the Test squad but his workload is being carefully managed. Others at the CoE include all-rounder Washington Sundar (hamstring), Harshit Rana (hamstring), and Nitish Kumar Reddy (quadriceps), all of whom were also ruled out of the Sri Lanka tour.
