While the rest of the world waits for spring, the hills of Shillong are bursting into vibrant pinks this November. The city's unique autumn cherry blossoms offer a breathtaking spectacle, making it an unmissable destination for travellers.
A Unique Autumn Bloom
Unlike the famous
spring blossoms of Japan, Shillong's spectacle is courtesy of the Himalayan Cherry Tree (Prunus cerasoides), which flowers in autumn. This makes Meghalaya's capital one of the few places in the world to host an autumn cherry blossom season. The bloom typically begins in late October and peaks in early to mid-November, transforming the cityscape into a watercolour painting of pink and white against the cool, post-monsoon greenery. This natural event offers a fresh and enchanting reason to explore Northeast India when the weather is at its most pleasant.
When and Where to See the Blossoms
The cherry blossoms can be seen across Shillong, often lining streets and filling public parks. For the most picturesque views, head to Ward's Lake, where the pink-flowered trees reflect beautifully in the water. Other prime locations include the expansive Shillong Golf Course, Lady Hydari Park, and the roads around the Polo Grounds and Upper Shillong. You don't need a special ticket to enjoy the flowers; a simple walk through these areas in the first half of November will reward you with stunning sights. The soft light of the early morning or the hour before the early sunset around 4:30 PM provides the best conditions for photography.
The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival 2026
Capitalising on this natural wonder, the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival has become a major event on India's cultural calendar. For 2026, the festival is scheduled for November 20th and 21st. This year, it moves to a new, larger venue at the New Shillong Highland Grounds to accommodate its growing popularity. While the blossoms provide the backdrop, the festival is a full-fledged music and cultural event. The 2026 lineup features international artists like Khalid, Swae Lee, and Boys Like Girls, alongside a host of national and regional talent. Beyond music, the festival features food stalls offering local Khasi delicacies, art installations, and cultural performances, creating a lively atmosphere that celebrates both nature and creativity.
Beyond the Blossoms: What Else to Do
November is an ideal month to explore Meghalaya, as the monsoon has passed, leaving clear skies and pleasant temperatures ranging from 12°C to 20°C. Take advantage of the weather to visit Laitlum Canyons for breathtaking panoramic views or head to Shillong Peak, the highest point in the state. A boat ride on the serene Umiam Lake is a must_do, and the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures offers a fascinating insight into the heritage of Northeast India. For a day trip, consider Cherrapunji to see the famous living root bridges and waterfalls, which still have a good flow of water after the rains.
Planning Your November Trip
Due to the festival and the beautiful weather, November is peak tourist season in Shillong, so booking flights and accommodation well in advance is highly recommended. The most convenient way to reach Shillong is to fly into Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), which is well-'connected' to major Indian cities. From Guwahati,' it's a scenic '3-'hour drive to Shillong,' and cabs or buses are readily available. Shillong's own airport at Umroi (SHL) has limited connectivity. When packing,' include layers of clothing,' as nights can get quite chilly,' dropping to around '8°C.' With daylight hours being short and sunset occurring around '4:'30 PM,' it's wise to start your sightseeing days early.
