A Surge in Seasonal Employment
Businesses across India are embarking on a significant hiring spree in anticipation of peak festive demand. Reports estimate that between 200,000 and 250,000 seasonal and gig jobs will be created in the second half of 2026. This represents a notable 15-20%
growth in festive hiring compared to the previous year, signaling strong optimism among companies for consumer spending during the upcoming festival period. This annual recruitment drive has become a crucial barometer of economic sentiment, and this year, the indicators point towards robust activity, particularly in consumer-facing sectors.
E-commerce and Logistics Lead the Charge
The primary engine of this hiring boom is the e-commerce and logistics sector. Major players like Flipkart have announced plans to create as many as 250,000 direct and indirect roles, including gig work, to manage the festive rush. These opportunities are concentrated in areas critical for online retail operations: warehousing, fulfilment centres, sortation hubs, and, most significantly, last-mile delivery. Logistics firms are preparing for shipment volumes to increase by up to 20%, prompting them to expand their temporary workforce by as much as 60% to handle the delivery surge. This highlights the immense operational scale required to meet customer expectations during high-volume shopping events like Diwali.
Beyond the Metros: A Geographic Shift
A defining feature of this year's festive hiring is its expanding geographical footprint. No longer confined to major metropolitan areas, the demand for seasonal workers is spreading rapidly into Tier-II and Tier-III cities. These smaller urban centers are expected to contribute around 45% of the total festive hiring demand, with recruitment in these markets projected to grow by an impressive 25-30%. Cities such as Jaipur, Lucknow, Indore, and Coimbatore are becoming new hotspots for job creation. This shift is driven by the expansion of e-commerce services, quick commerce platforms, and regional fulfilment networks into new markets, bringing economic opportunities to a wider population.
The Changing Nature of Festive Work
While traditional roles in retail sales and delivery remain dominant, technology is reshaping the festive job landscape. Companies are increasingly seeking talent for new-age operational roles, which are expected to see 15-20% growth. These positions include dark-store inventory controllers, returns and refunds specialists, and marketplace operations professionals. Furthermore, companies are adopting a more strategic approach to hiring, moving away from last-minute recruitment to predictive workforce planning. Many employers now begin planning 12 to 14 weeks ahead of the festive peak to build and train their talent pools, ensuring they are ready to deploy as soon as demand spikes.
A Boost for the Gig Economy
The festive season provides a significant, if temporary, boost to India's gig economy. The majority of the new roles are for seasonal or temporary contract workers, offering flexibility for both employers and employees. This surge is also creating more inclusive opportunities. An estimated 20-25% of these festive hires are expected to be freshers, giving many their first entry into the workforce. E-commerce giant Flipkart noted that nearly 75,000 of its seasonal hires are first-time workers. Additionally, female participation in the festive workforce is projected to rise by 30-35% as companies tap into talent pools in non-metro locations.
