Popular destinations across Southeast Asia are streamlining their immigration processes by replacing paper-based landing cards with compulsory online systems. For Indian passport holders, this shift requires a small but crucial change in travel preparation.
Countries like Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand now mandate that all foreign visitors, regardless of their visa status, submit their arrival details online before they land. These digital forms are not visas but are a mandatory pre-registration of your entry. Failing to complete them can lead to delays or complications at immigration, so it's vital to get them done before you even head to the airport.
Malaysia: The MDAC Requirement
Malaysia requires all foreign nationals, including Indian citizens travelling visa-free, to complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC). This must be done within three days prior to your arrival. The process is free and should only be completed on the official Malaysian Immigration Department portal. The form requires your passport details, travel information like flight numbers, and your accommodation address in Malaysia. Even though Indian passport holders can enjoy visa-free entry for up to 30 days, completing the MDAC is a separate, non-negotiable step. Once submitted, you will receive a confirmation, which is electronically linked to your passport for immigration clearance.
Singapore: The SG Arrival Card (SGAC)
Singapore has fully transitioned to the electronic SG Arrival Card (SGAC), which has replaced the paper-based disembarkation/embarkation card. All travellers, including those from India, must submit this form online before arriving in Singapore. It is crucial to note that the SGAC is not a visa; Indian passport holders still need to secure a separate visa before travel. The SGAC must be submitted within three days of your arrival date via the official Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) website or the MyICA mobile app. You will need to provide your passport and travel details, accommodation information, and a health declaration. There is no fee for submitting the SGAC through the official portal.
Thailand: The TDAC System
Thailand implemented its Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) system on May 1, 2025, making it mandatory for all foreign visitors arriving by air, land, or sea. This digital form replaces the old paper-based TM6 card. Travellers should fill out the TDAC within 72 hours of their arrival. The form requires passport details, travel plans, accommodation information, and a health status declaration. It is important to use the official TDAC website, as authorities have warned about scam sites that charge a fee for the free service. The TDAC is a required registration for entry and is separate from any visa requirements.
Indonesia: e-VOA and Customs Declaration
For travel to Indonesia, Indian citizens can obtain an electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VOA) online before their trip to skip queues at the airport. This allows for a 30-day stay and is available for entry through major airports like those in Bali (Denpasar) and Jakarta. In addition to the visa, all travellers must complete an Electronic Customs Declaration (ECD) online within 48 hours before arrival. This system has replaced the paper forms, and the QR code generated upon completion must be shown at customs. For those visiting Bali, there is also a mandatory regional tourist levy of IDR 150,000 that is best paid online before travel to avoid airport queues.
