Start With the Source: Your Airline
Your first and most reliable point of information is always the airline you are flying with. Download the airline's official app and sign up for notifications. Enter your booking reference or PNR number to get real-time updates on your flight's status,
including departure times, gate numbers, and any potential delays. Most airline websites also have a dedicated 'Flight Status' section where you can track your flight by number or route. Airlines will typically use the mobile number and email address provided during booking to send alerts about significant changes like cancellations or rescheduling, so ensure your contact details are correct.
Use a Third-Party Flight Tracker
For an extra layer of information, consider using a third-party flight tracking app or website. Services like Flightradar24, FlightAware, and Flighty provide incredibly detailed, real-time data. These apps often update faster than the official airline notifications because they pull raw flight data directly. Some can even show you where your inbound aircraft is, giving you an early heads-up on a potential delay long before the airline makes an official announcement. Many of these apps are free and offer global coverage, making them an essential tool for any international traveller.
Check Airport-Specific Advisories
Airlines aren't the only source of potential disruption. Airports themselves can face challenges. Before you leave for the airport, check the official websites of both your departure and arrival airports. They often post advisories about increased security measures, runway maintenance, or terminal congestion that could impact your travel time. For instance, during holidays or national events, airports in India often enhance security, advising passengers to arrive much earlier than the standard three hours recommended for international flights. Major hubs like Delhi Airport have detailed guides and real-time flight boards on their websites.
Don't Forget Your Documents and Visa
A confirmed flight is of little use if your travel documents aren't in order. Double-check that your passport has at least six months of validity from your date of entry into your destination country—a strict requirement for many nations. Verify the visa requirements for your destination well in advance; some countries offer visa-on-arrival for Indian citizens, while others require a pre-approved visa. Keep physical and digital copies of your passport, visa, flight tickets, and hotel reservations in a secure but accessible place. Remember that for travel to countries like the US, certain documents like student forms (I-20) must be in your carry-on, not checked luggage.
Understanding Delays and Cancellations
If your flight status shows 'Delayed' or 'Cancelled', it's important to know your rights. In India, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has rules governing these situations. For significant delays, airlines are generally required to provide meals and refreshments. For cancellations with little notice, airlines must offer either an alternative flight or a full refund. Recent DGCA rules also introduced a 48-hour window after booking for free cancellation or changes on many tickets, provided travel is not imminent. If a disruption occurs, contact the airline's customer service immediately to understand your options. While circumstances like weather are beyond an airline's control, you are still often entitled to assistance.
