Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir: The Powder Paradise
Often hailed as the premier skiing destination in India, Gulmarg is in a league of its own. Its legendary powder snow, high-altitude terrain, and the Gulmarg Gondola—one of the highest cable cars in the world—attract enthusiasts from across the globe.
The resort offers a vast expanse of terrain, from gentle nursery slopes for absolute beginners to challenging off-piste runs for seasoned experts descending from the formidable Apharwat Peak. The main ski season runs from December to March, with late January and February offering the deepest and most reliable snow conditions. While it is a world-class destination, the base area is equipped with several surface lifts on wide, groomed slopes, making it a surprisingly safe and economical place to learn.
Auli, Uttarakhand: Scenic and Beginner-Friendly
Nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas, Auli is renowned for its stunning panoramic views of Himalayan peaks like Nanda Devi and its well-maintained, beginner-friendly slopes. It is widely considered one of the best training grounds in India for those new to skiing or snowboarding. The resort features wide, groomed slopes with varying levels of difficulty, including dedicated nursery slopes perfect for first-timers to build confidence. The Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) runs popular 7-day and 14-day courses that include accommodation, meals, and instruction. The best time to visit for reliable snow is from late December to early March, with January and February being the peak months. An 800-metre chairlift and a surface ski lift ensure you spend more time skiing and less time walking uphill.
Solang Valley, Himachal Pradesh: The Adventure Hub
Just a short drive from the popular tourist town of Manali, Solang Valley (or Solang Nala) is a bustling hub for winter sports. Its accessible location and variety of activities make it a favourite among families and casual tourists looking for a taste of adventure. The slopes here are well-suited for both beginners and intermediate skiers. The season for skiing and snowboarding generally runs from December to February, when the valley is transformed into a snowy playground. Besides skiing, visitors can also indulge in snowboarding, paragliding, and zorbing. For those serious about learning, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS) offers courses here.
Narkanda, Himachal Pradesh: A Quieter Alternative
For those looking for a less crowded experience near Shimla, Narkanda is an excellent choice. Situated about 65 km from Shimla, it offers a more substantial skiing experience than nearby Kufri, with longer runs and terrain that suits intermediate skiers. Its higher altitude means it holds snow more reliably through the winter, typically from late December through March. The slopes around Hatu Peak have been used for skiing for decades, making it one of the oldest ski destinations in the region. While much smaller in scale than Gulmarg or Auli, Narkanda provides a quieter, more natural winter atmosphere for those looking to develop their skills away from the major tourist crowds.
