A New Gateway for Indian Travellers
As part of its ambitious Vision 2030 plan to diversify its economy and boost tourism, Saudi Arabia has unveiled a major simplification of its travel procedures. The new Package Visa is a pilot initiative designed to make the country more accessible for
short-haul trips, and India is one of the first seven countries eligible for the programme. This move eliminates the traditional, multi-step process where travellers had to secure a visa, book flights, and arrange hotels separately. Now, these crucial components are integrated into one transaction, making a weekend getaway or a short holiday to the Kingdom a much more straightforward prospect for Indian passport holders.
How the Integrated Process Works
The beauty of the Package Visa lies in its simplicity. The entire journey is digital and designed to be completed in a few steps. First, travellers choose a pre-approved tourism package from an accredited travel agency's online platform. Currently, the Ministry of Tourism has authorised providers like Almosafer and Reserval for this service. After selecting a package that includes round-trip flights and accommodation, the user completes the payment securely online. This single transaction automatically triggers the electronic visa application. Within a maximum of 48 hours, the traveller receives their e-visa, travel insurance, and all booking confirmations directly via email, with no need to visit an embassy.
Key Requirements and Benefits
This new system offers clear advantages, primarily convenience and speed. It significantly reduces paperwork and the logistical challenges of coordinating separate bookings. For a package to qualify, it must include a confirmed round-trip flight and a stay at a Ministry of Tourism-licensed hotel rated four stars or above. The single-entry tourist visa granted is valid for three months, allowing for a stay of up to 88 days. While the visa itself does not cover Umrah arrangements, holders are permitted to travel anywhere within Saudi Arabia, including the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. The process provides travellers with confidence, knowing they are booking with government-approved providers and that all core components of their trip are handled at once.
Who Is This Package For?
The Package Visa is ideal for Indian tourists planning short-term visits. This includes those looking for a quick cultural escape, fans travelling for major sporting events like the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, or concert-goers attending performances by international artists. It caters to the growing demand for experience-based travel, as packages can also include optional add-ons like event tickets, guided tours, and other local activities. The minimum stay requirement is two days, making it perfect for a long weekend. The streamlined nature of the booking is particularly appealing for spontaneous trips, removing the lengthy planning process that often acts as a barrier to short-haul international travel.
Exploring Beyond the Visa
With the logistics simplified, travellers can focus more on their itinerary. For a short trip from India, there are several accessible highlights. In Jeddah, visitors can explore the historic Al-Balad district, a UNESCO World Heritage site, or enjoy the modern waterfront. The capital, Riyadh, offers a blend of futuristic architecture, high-end shopping, and cultural sites like the Diriyah heritage district. For those seeking natural wonders, the dramatic cliffs of Jebel Fihrayn, known as the 'Edge of the World', are a popular excursion from Riyadh. The launch of the Package Visa makes these destinations, and others across the Kingdom, more accessible than ever for a quick and memorable journey.
