The New Era: One Vehicle, One FASTag
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has recently enforced the 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' initiative to streamline the electronic tolling system. This policy was introduced to curb the misuse of having multiple FASTags for one vehicle or using
a single tag for several cars. As part of this rule, all older or duplicate FASTags linked to your vehicle have been deactivated, leaving only the most recently issued one active. This move, which took full effect earlier this year, aims to enhance transparency and reduce delays at toll plazas. For vehicle owners, this means it's critical to know which of your FASTags is the active one to ensure funds are loaded onto the correct account.
Why KYC and a Healthy Balance Are Crucial
Alongside the one-tag rule, there is a renewed emphasis on completing your 'Know Your Customer' (KYC) process. Banks have been deactivating or blacklisting FASTags with incomplete KYC details, even if they have a sufficient balance. An insufficient balance is another major point of failure. If your account balance is too low, your tag can be blacklisted, preventing you from passing through a toll plaza. In such cases, you will likely be required to pay double the toll amount in cash as a penalty. New validation rules also mean that a last-minute recharge right before the toll booth might not work if your tag has been blacklisted for having a low balance for more than an hour before you arrive. These stricter enforcement measures are designed to make the system more efficient, but they place more responsibility on the user.
The Aftermath of the Paytm Payments Bank Directive
A significant recent change involved FASTags issued by Paytm Payments Bank. Following a directive from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the bank ceased its operations, which meant that FASTags linked to it could no longer be topped up after a specific deadline. Users were required to deactivate their old Paytm FASTag and acquire a new one from another authorised bank to continue using the service. Many drivers who missed this transition may find their old tags are now inactive. Verifying that your current FASTag is not from Paytm Payments Bank is a simple but essential check. If it is, you will need to purchase and activate a new tag from one of the many other authorised issuers immediately to avoid issues on the highway.
Your Pre-Trip FASTag Checklist
To avoid getting stuck at a toll plaza, add these simple checks to your road trip preparation routine: 1. Verify Your Active Tag: Use the official IHMCL portal or your banking app to confirm which FASTag is active for your vehicle registration number, especially if you have had multiple tags in the past. 2. Check Your KYC Status: Log in to your FASTag issuer’s portal and navigate to the profile or KYC section to ensure your status is 'Verified'. If not, you can update it online or by visiting a bank branch with the required documents. 3. Confirm Sufficient Balance: Before you leave, check that your FASTag wallet has enough funds to cover the tolls for your entire journey. A low balance can get your tag temporarily blacklisted. 4. Recharge in Advance: Don't wait until you're on the highway to top up. Recharge your account well before you start your trip to ensure the balance is reflected and your tag status is active. Recharges are usually instant but can sometimes take time to process.
