Why the Major Service Changes This August?
Southern Railway is undertaking critical infrastructure and redevelopment work across its network, leading to temporary but significant adjustments in train operations. A major cause for these changes is the ongoing redevelopment of Chennai Egmore, one
of the busiest railway stations. This work, aimed at enhancing capacity and modernizing facilities, necessitates partial cancellations and changes in originating stations for several key express trains from August 5 to August 20, 2026. Additionally, separate engineering works, including yard remodelling at Balasore station and track upgrades in the Vijayawada Division, are causing cancellations and diversions for long-distance trains passing through the zone. These essential upgrades are designed to improve safety and operational efficiency in the long run, but require short-term disruptions for passengers.
Trains Terminating or Originating at Alternate Stations
Due to the redevelopment at Chennai Egmore, several trains will not operate to or from the station for a period in August. From August 5 to August 19, multiple services will be 'short-terminated'. This means they will end their journey at an alternate station. Affected trains include the Thanjavur-Chennai Egmore Express, Mangaluru-Chennai Egmore Express, Kollam-Chennai Egmore Express, and the Salem-Chennai Egmore Express, all of which will terminate at Tambaram. The Tiruchirappalli-Chennai Egmore Rockfort Express will terminate at Mambalam during this period. Consequently, the corresponding return services will originate from these alternate stations. From August 6 to August 20, the Chennai Egmore-Thanjavur Uzhavan Express, Chennai Egmore-Mangaluru Express, and Chennai Egmore-Kollam Ananthapuri Express will all start their journeys from Tambaram instead of Egmore. Passengers booked on these trains are advised to make arrangements to board from or de-board at these alternate stations.
Key Cancellations and Diversions to Note
Beyond the changes at Egmore, other engineering works have led to outright cancellations. Due to yard remodelling at Balasore, the Villupuram-Kharagpur Superfast Express (August 4) and its return service from Kharagpur (August 6) have been cancelled. Similarly, the Kanniyakumari-Dibrugarh Vivek Express (August 7) and the Mangaluru Central-Santragachi Vivek Superfast Express (August 1) have also been cancelled. Several long-distance trains will also run on diverted routes. The Ahmedabad-Tiruchchirappalli Weekly Express Special on August 6 and 13 will be diverted via Tiruttani and Chengalpattu, skipping its usual stops at Arakkonam, Perambur, and Chennai Egmore. Its return service will follow a similarly diverted route on August 9 and 16. The Ernakulam Junction-Patna Superfast Express will also be diverted via Gudivada on its journey dated August 3.
Rescheduled and Delayed Services
In addition to cancellations and diversions, some trains will operate on a rescheduled timeline. The Purulia-Tirunelveli Superfast Express departing on August 3 has been rescheduled to leave one hour later than its usual time. Its return service, the Tirunelveli-Purulia Superfast Express, will depart 90 minutes later than scheduled on August 5. Passengers travelling on the Shalimar-MGR Chennai Central Superfast Express on August 4 should also anticipate a delay of one hour en route. These changes, while less disruptive than a full cancellation, can still impact connecting journeys and arrival times. Travellers are strongly encouraged to verify the exact departure times for their specific dates of travel to avoid missing their train or facing extended waits at the station.

With numerous changes in effect, relying on your original ticket information may not be enough. Southern Railway has advised all passengers to verify their train schedules before commencing their journey. You can also check the IRCTC website and app for the latest updates on train running status and revised schedules. These official platforms will provide the most current information on cancellations, diversions, and rescheduled timings. Given the scale of these disruptions, double-checking your itinerary a day before and on the day of travel is highly recommended to ensure a smooth journey.
