Why Your Berth Choice Is a Security Choice
When booking a ticket on Indian Railways, most people select a berth based on comfort, convenience, or the luck of the draw. A lower berth offers easy access, while an upper berth promises privacy. However, each choice carries significant implications
for your luggage. The location of your seat determines how easily you can store your bags, how securely you can chain them, and how visible they are to you and others. Thinking about luggage security from the moment you book can prevent the stress and potential loss that comes from a bag going missing at a crowded station or during an overnight journey.
The Lower Berth: Convenient but Exposed
The lower berth is often the most sought-after, especially by senior citizens and families. Its biggest advantage for luggage is the direct access to the space underneath, where large suitcases can be stored. Most coaches have loops or bars under the seat specifically for chaining your luggage, and with a lower berth, your bags are always within your line of sight. This makes it easy to keep an eye on things. However, this convenience is a double-edged sword. The lower berth is a high-traffic area. During the day, it often serves as a communal seating space for middle and upper berth passengers, meaning more people are around your belongings. Its accessibility also makes it a more visible target for opportunistic thieves in crowded compartments.
The Upper Berth: A Surprisingly Secure Haven
For many solo travellers and security-conscious individuals, the upper berth is the top choice. Once you've climbed up, your space is private and you won't be disturbed by people moving in the aisle. This seclusion is a major security benefit. You can keep smaller bags, like a backpack with valuables, right beside you near the wall or under your pillow while you sleep. For larger luggage stored below, some travellers feel a sense of unease, but the reality is that a thief would have a harder time inconspicuously accessing bags from an upper berth. The primary drawback is the inconvenience of climbing up and down, especially if you need to access your main luggage frequently. However, many feel this is a small price to pay for uninterrupted rest and peace of mind.
Side Berths: A Compromise with Complications
Side lower and side upper berths offer a different travel experience. The side lower berth provides excellent window views and easy aisle access. However, the luggage space underneath is often shared with the side upper passenger and can be less accommodating than the main berths. Furthermore, being directly on the main aisle can make you and your luggage feel exposed, particularly in non-AC coaches without curtains. The side upper berth offers more headroom and privacy than its main-bay counterpart, and many travellers find it comfortable for both sitting and sleeping. You can keep smaller bags with you securely. However, just like the side lower, you are reliant on shared and sometimes limited space for your main suitcase, which remains in the high-traffic corridor below.
Beyond the Berth: Universal Security Rules
Regardless of your berth, some security practices are non-negotiable. The most effective deterrent is a sturdy chain and a good quality lock. Securing your luggage to the hooks provided under the lower berths makes it nearly impossible for someone to simply walk away with your bag. Always keep your most valuable items—wallet, phone, documents, and electronics—in a smaller daypack or sling bag that stays with you at all times, even when you go to the washroom. Be extra vigilant when the train is pulling into or leaving a station, as these are prime times for theft. Finally, avoid accepting food from strangers and be generally aware of your surroundings, which are timeless rules for safe travel.
