The Endless Trend Treadmill
One minute, the 10-step Korean skincare routine is the holy grail. The next, it’s all about ‘slugging’—slathering your face in petroleum jelly. Then comes ‘skin cycling’, a complex rotation of active ingredients. These trends, often born on TikTok and
Instagram, promise revolutionary results. They create a cycle of hype, consumption, and confusion. We buy new serums, essences, and gadgets, hoping to achieve that flawless, filtered look we see on screen. But this constant experimentation can be harsh on our skin barrier and our wallets. More often than not, we are left with half-used bottles and a complexion that is more irritated than illuminated.
The Science of 'Less Is More'
Dermatologists consistently argue that skin, as an organ, thrives on consistency, not chaos. The skin barrier, or stratum corneum, is your face's first line of defence against environmental aggressors like pollution and bacteria. Its primary job is to keep good things (like moisture) in and bad things (like irritants) out. When you constantly introduce new, potent ingredients from trending routines, you risk compromising this barrier. This can lead to sensitivity, redness, breakouts, and dryness—often the very issues you were trying to fix. A simple routine, on the other hand, supports the skin barrier, allowing it to function optimally and heal itself.
The Unshakeable Three-Step Foundation
So, what does simplicity look like? It boils down to three foundational pillars that every dermatologist agrees on: Cleanse, Moisturise, and Protect. 1. Cleanse: Washing your face removes dirt, oil, and pollutants that accumulate throughout the day. In India’s humid and often polluted environment, a gentle but effective cleanser used twice daily is non-negotiable. 2. Moisturise: Hydrated skin is healthy skin. A good moisturiser replenishes water content and strengthens the skin barrier, regardless of whether your skin is dry, oily, or combination. Even in sticky weather, a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser is essential. 3. Protect: Sunscreen is the single most important anti-ageing and skin health product. Daily application of a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) protects against UV damage, which is a leading cause of wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer. This is not just for beach days; it's for every single day.
Building Your Simple But Mighty Routine
Embracing simplicity doesn’t mean being boring; it means being smart. Start by choosing products that suit your skin type for the three core steps. Find a gentle cleanser that doesn’t leave your skin feeling tight, a moisturiser that feels comfortable, and a sunscreen you’ll actually wear every day. Stick with this routine for at least a month to allow your skin to adjust and show results. The goal is consistency. Once this foundation is solid, you can consider adding one active ingredient to target a specific concern. For example, if you struggle with dark spots, you might introduce a Vitamin C serum in the morning. If anti-ageing is a goal, a gentle retinoid at night could be beneficial. The key is to add one product at a time, slowly and thoughtfully, rather than adopting an entirely new, complicated system overnight.
