Since early 2024, Malaysia has implemented the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC), a mandatory online pre-arrival form for nearly all foreign travellers. This digital declaration replaces the old paper-based landing cards and is designed to streamline
the immigration process. It's crucial to understand that the MDAC is not a visa; it's a separate requirement that must be fulfilled even by travellers from visa-free countries. The form is free to complete and must be submitted online through the official Immigration Department portal within three days of your arrival in Malaysia. Be wary of unofficial third-party websites that may try to charge a fee.
Who Needs an MDAC for Transit?
This is where it gets specific for transit passengers. The simple rule is: if you do not pass through Malaysian immigration, you do not need an MDAC. Passengers who stay 'airside' in the international transit area to catch a connecting flight are exempt. However, you WILL need to complete an MDAC if your transit involves clearing immigration for any reason. This includes situations like collecting and re-checking luggage for separate flight bookings, needing to transfer between Kuala Lumpur International Airport's (KLIA) two terminals (KLIA1 and KLIA2) which are not connected airside, or if you plan to leave the airport during a long layover to visit the city or stay in a landside hotel. Even if you're unsure, some officials recommend filling one out just in case of an emergency that requires you to enter the country.
How to Complete and Use the MDAC
Filling out the form is straightforward. You’ll need your personal details, passport information, travel dates, flight number, and the address of your accommodation in Malaysia. Once submitted, a confirmation with a QR code will be sent to your email. It’s a smart hack to save a screenshot of this QR code to your phone and also keep a printed copy in your passport holder, ensuring you have it ready for airline staff at check-in and for immigration upon arrival. While first-time visitors to Malaysia will need to have their passports verified at a manual counter, subsequent visits may allow the use of the airport's automated e-gates for a speedier clearance.
Hack 1: Master KLIA's Terminals and Transport
Kuala Lumpur International Airport consists of two main terminals: KLIA1 (for full-service carriers like Malaysia Airlines) and KLIA2 (the hub for low-cost airlines like AirAsia). A free 24/7 shuttle bus service runs between the two terminals. For the fastest trip into Kuala Lumpur city (around 28 minutes), the KLIA Ekspres train is your best bet, running directly to the KL Sentral transport hub. A money-saving hack for those not in a rush is to take the KLIA Transit train (which makes stops) and split your journey. By buying a ticket from KLIA to an intermediate station like Putrajaya or Salak Tinggi, and then a second ticket onward to KL Sentral, you can significantly reduce the fare.

If you have a short layover and are staying airside, KLIA offers numerous lounges, including the Plaza Premium Lounge which is accessible to economy passengers for a fee or with certain credit card programs. For longer layovers of six hours or more, a trip into the city is feasible. You can take the KLIA Ekspres to see iconic sights like the Petronas Twin Towers. If you're short on time but have cleared immigration, a free shuttle bus can take you to the nearby Mitsui Outlet Park for some shopping and dining. KLIA provides free Wi-Fi throughout its terminals. For overnight transits, there are several sleep options, including airside and landside capsule hotels that offer a private space to rest for a few hours. Luggage storage facilities are also available if you want to explore unencumbered. For payments, while cash is accepted, Malaysia is increasingly digital. Downloading an e-wallet app like GrabPay or Touch 'n Go can be very useful for paying for transport, food, and shopping both in and out of the airport.
