Imagine the rolling green hills of Meghalaya blushing with soft pink flowers. This isn't a springtime dream, but a reality every November, making it one of the world's few autumn cherry blossom destinations. Here’s how to plan your trip.
Timing Your Trip Perfectly
Meghalaya's wild
Himalayan cherry trees typically bloom for a few weeks between late October and mid-November. The visual peak often falls in the first half of November, though the exact timing can vary with the weather. To anchor your trip, plan around the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, one of India's most popular music and cultural events. For 2026, the festival is scheduled for November 20th and 21st. While the festival is a major draw, arriving a few days earlier can be a good strategy to see the blossoms with fewer crowds. Keep an eye on the official Meghalaya Tourism website for ticket announcements and the final lineup.
Getting to the Abode of Clouds
The most common route to Shillong is by air to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati, Assam, which is well-connected to major Indian cities. From Guwahati, it’s a scenic 3-to-4-hour drive of about 120 kilometres to Shillong. You can hire a private taxi or opt for a shared cab, with services readily available at the airport. Booking your cab in advance is wise, as demand soars during the festival weekend. Shillong also has its own airport, Umroi Airport (SHL), which is closer to the city but has limited flight connectivity.
Where to Find the Best Blooms
While the main festival has moved to a new, larger venue in the New Shillong area, the cherry blossoms themselves are scattered across the city, turning streets and parks into a floral wonderland. Ward's Lake is perhaps the most iconic spot, where the pink trees reflect beautifully in the water. Other prime locations include the Shillong Golf Course, Lady Hydari Park, and the roads around the Polo Grounds. A drive through Upper Shillong or along the Guwahati-Shillong highway will also reward you with beautiful, unexpected clusters of blossoms lining the roads.
Booking Your Stay in Advance
November is peak tourist season in Shillong, and hotel prices are at their highest. Accommodation fills up extremely fast, so booking your stay several weeks, or even months, in advance is essential. For easy access to markets and restaurants, consider hotels in the Police Bazar area. If you prefer a quieter environment, look for homestays and guesthouses in neighbourhoods like Lachumiere or Golf Links. Options range from luxury hotels like the Courtyard by Marriott to budget-friendly hostels and charming homestays, catering to every type of traveller.
Beyond the Blossoms: Other Must_Dos
While the cherry blossoms are the star attraction, your trip can be much more. A complete Meghalaya itinerary often includes a day trip to Cherrapunji (Sohra) to witness majestic waterfalls like Nohkalikai Falls. You can also visit Mawphlang Sacred Grove, a dense, ancient forest protected by local traditions. Another popular excursion is to Dawki to see the crystal_clear waters of the Umngot River and a visit to Mawlynnong, famously known as 'Asia's Cleanest Village'. These trips can be easily arranged with local tour operators or by hiring a private car for the day.
Practical Tips for Your Trip
Pack layers. While days can be pleasant, November evenings and mornings in Shillong are quite chilly, so a warm jacket is a must, especially if you plan to attend evening concerts. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for exploring the city's sights and festival grounds. It’s also wise to carry an umbrella, as the weather in the hills can be unpredictable. When exploring, respect the local culture and environment by keeping public spaces clean. Finally, since the main festival venue is now on the outskirts, plan your transportation to and from your hotel in advance, as getting a ride after the final performance can be challenging.
