The conversation around AI in the Indian IT sector has shifted from fear of replacement to a more nuanced reality of collaboration. According to industry body NASSCOM, the future of work will be defined by humans working alongside AI, not just using it occasionally.
This isn't about mass job elimination, but a fundamental change in what jobs expect from people. Roles are evolving internally, with AI handling a significant portion of routine tasks. For instance, some reports indicate that over 40% of software development work and a substantial part of business process management (BPM) are already being driven by AI. This allows human workers to move away from repetitive execution and focus on higher-order activities like strategy, complex problem-solving, and system architecture.
Roles Undergoing Deep Transformation
Certain career paths are at the epicentre of this AI-driven shift. These are not necessarily disappearing, but the day-to-day tasks are changing dramatically. Roles heavy on repetitive, rule-based processes face the biggest evolution. This includes entry-level positions in data entry, back-office processing, and Tier-1 customer support. AI chatbots and automated systems are becoming increasingly capable of handling routine queries, with some analysts predicting that a majority of customer interactions will soon be handled by AI without human intervention. Similarly, junior developers and software testers are finding that AI can now generate boilerplate code, write unit tests, and perform manual testing tasks much faster. The focus for these roles is shifting from doing the task manually to overseeing, verifying, and managing the AI tools that perform them.
The Squeeze on Entry-Level Hiring
One of the most immediate impacts of AI has been on the hiring of freshers. With AI automating many of the foundational tasks traditionally assigned to junior employees, companies are becoming more selective. Recent data from the World Bank and other reports confirm that entry-level, white-collar workers in roles highly exposed to AI are feeling a disproportionate impact. Hiring intent for freshers has seen a decline as companies prioritise candidates with specialised skills and the ability to work with AI tools from day one. This doesn't mean the door is closed, but it does mean that a degree alone is no longer enough. The emphasis has moved decisively towards demonstrated skills and the ability to apply AI in practical scenarios.
High-Growth Frontiers: The New Demand
For every task AI automates, it creates new needs and opportunities. The demand for professionals who can build, manage, and strategise around AI is surging. NASSCOM estimates that India will require over a million AI professionals by 2027, but the current trained supply is a fraction of that. This has created a massive demand for specific roles. Machine Learning Engineers, Generative AI Developers, and Data Scientists are among the most sought-after positions. New and rapidly growing roles include MLOps Engineers, who ensure AI models work in real-world production environments, and AI Product Managers, who connect business goals with technical execution. Even non-coding roles like Prompt Engineer and AI Ethics Specialist are emerging as critical functions in the new AI-powered ecosystem.
The Mandate to Upskill and Reskill
The single most important strategy for navigating this shift is continuous learning. The consensus among industry leaders is that upskilling is no longer optional but a core requirement for career survival and growth. This is not just about learning to code. The most valuable skills include data literacy, critical thinking to evaluate AI outputs, and adaptability. Interestingly, the push for AI skills is not just coming from junior employees. A significant portion of enrolments in AI and machine learning courses are from senior professionals who recognise the need to lead their teams through this transition. The goal is to evolve from being a simple process executor to becoming an AI-augmented professional who can leverage technology to deliver greater value.
