The Journey Is the New Destination
A fundamental shift is underway in how young Indians approach travel. Instead of rushing to tick destinations off a list, many are embracing the principles of 'slow travel'. This mindset prioritises deep cultural immersion and authentic experiences over
packed itineraries. Train travel fits perfectly into this philosophy. It's not about getting somewhere fast; it's about what you see and feel along the way. For Gen Z and millennials, the journey has become an integral part of the adventure, with 95% of young travellers seeking personal and unique trips rather than pre-planned tours. The rhythmic clatter of the wheels, the ever-changing landscapes, and the unscripted moments on a station platform are no longer things to be endured but experiences to be savoured and shared.
The 'Vistadome' Effect and Scenic Routes
Indian Railways has responded to this growing demand for experiential travel with innovations like Vistadome coaches. These carriages, featuring panoramic glass windows and rotating seats, are designed to offer immersive views of the journey. First introduced in 2018, their immense popularity on scenic routes like Mumbai-Goa and through the Western Ghats on the Mumbai-Pune line has been a game-changer. These coaches often see occupancy rates of over 90%, generating significant revenue and proving that passengers are willing to pay for a premium viewing experience. Routes passing through the tea gardens of Assam, the backwaters of Kerala, or the deserts of Rajasthan offer a visual feast that flights simply cannot match. Even heritage 'toy trains', like the Nilgiri Mountain Railway that moves at a gentle 9 km/h, are celebrated for the breathtaking journey they offer, turning the slow pace into a key attraction.
Driven by Social Media and Shared Experiences
In the age of Instagram and TikTok, the aesthetic appeal of train travel is a powerful draw. A scenic train route can become a destination in itself, sparked by a viral reel or a friend's story. The 'train-core' aesthetic—capturing misty mornings through a train window, the charm of a chaiwala on the platform, or the vibrant life of passing towns—has made train journeys highly shareable content. This trend is also about community. For many young people, travel is a social activity, and a train compartment provides a unique space for bonding with friends. The shared experience, whether it's an impromptu music session or conversations with fellow passengers, creates stories that last longer than the trip itself. This performative aspect, however, can sometimes lead to a lack of civic sense, as some passenger complaints on social media have highlighted.
Adventure on a Budget
Beyond the romance and aesthetics, practicality plays a crucial role. For students and young professionals with limited disposable income, train travel remains the most cost-effective way to explore the country. A recent report highlighted that while young travellers crave unique experiences, affordability remains a major concern. The train offers a solution, allowing for more frequent, spontaneous getaways. A short, three-day trip can be easily planned around a train schedule without breaking the bank. This affordability allows for a different kind of luxury: the luxury of time and distance. It enables longer, more extensive trips that would be financially prohibitive by air, opening up a wider map of India to a generation eager for exploration. Indian Railways also offers a variety of tour packages, from budget-friendly 'Bharat Darshan' tours to themed pilgrimage circuits, making organised travel more accessible.
