A Window to a Greener World
The journey from Visakhapatnam to Araku Valley transforms into a cinematic experience aboard the Vistadome coach. Specially designed for tourism, these coaches feature massive glass windows, a transparent glass-domed roof, and an observation lounge that
provides an uninterrupted, panoramic view of the passing scenery. During the monsoon, this experience is particularly magical. The route itself is a testament to engineering, navigating the steep inclines of the Eastern Ghats. The approximately four-hour journey covers around 115-130 kilometres, passing through an impressive 58 tunnels and over 84 bridges. For passengers in the Vistadome coach, each tunnel exit is a dramatic reveal, opening up to a new, stunning vista. The rhythmic plunge into darkness and subsequent explosion of light and colour is a highlight for many travellers, especially children. The train ascends from near sea level in Visakhapatnam to an altitude of over 900 meters at Araku, making the changing landscape all the more dramatic.
Inside the Glass Coach
Comfort is key to the Vistadome experience. The air-conditioned coaches are equipped with 40 to 45 comfortable, reclining seats that can rotate 360 degrees, allowing passengers to face the direction that offers the best view at any given moment. The wide window panes and the glass ceiling provide a truly immersive feeling, making you feel one with the surrounding nature. The coaches are also fitted with LED lights and a GPS-based information system with TV screens to keep passengers informed about the journey. Given their popularity, these coaches are often in high demand, and the East Coast Railway sometimes attaches extra coaches to meet the tourist rush, particularly during peak seasons.
Planning Your Monsoon Journey
Booking a seat on the Vistadome coach requires some advance planning, as they sell out quickly. Tickets can be booked online through the IRCTC portal. The designated coach is the Executive Class (EV) attached to the Visakhapatnam-Kirandul Passenger train (Train No. 08551). The train typically departs from Visakhapatnam in the morning, around 7 AM, reaching Araku before noon. While the monsoon (June to September) offers the most vibrant green landscapes and fullest waterfalls, the post-monsoon period until February is also considered an ideal time, with pleasant weather and clear views. It is advisable to book well in advance, especially for weekend travel.
Exploring Araku Valley
The journey is just the beginning. Once in Araku, a host of attractions awaits. The Tribal Museum offers insights into the local culture, while the Padmapuram Gardens provide a serene escape. No trip is complete without visiting the famed Borra Caves, million-year-old limestone formations located a short drive from the valley. During the monsoon, waterfalls like Chaparai and Katiki are at their majestic best. Many travellers opt for a rail-cum-road package, taking the train up to Araku and returning by car to visit sights like the Ananthagiri coffee plantations and Galikonda viewpoint along the way.
