Kedarkantha Base Camp: A Winter Classic
Arguably the most popular winter trek in Uttarakhand, Kedarkantha offers some of the most rewarding campsites. The trail, starting from the village of Sankri, winds through dense pine forests carpeted in snow. The first key campsite, Juda-ka-Talab, is
set beside a small, frozen lake surrounded by pines, creating a picture-perfect winter scene. Further up, the Kedarkantha Base Camp sits in an open meadow, offering unobstructed views of Himalayan giants like the Swargarohini and Bandarpoonch ranges. Nights are cold, with temperatures often dropping well below freezing, but the experience of camping under a sky full of stars on a bed of snow is unforgettable. The final pre-dawn push to the 12,500-foot summit provides a stunning 360-degree sunrise view.
Brahmatal: Camping by a Frozen Lake
The Brahmatal trek is another winter favourite, renowned for its incredible views of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti. Starting from Lohajung, the trail takes you through enchanting rhododendron and oak forests that look magical under a fresh layer of snow. The journey features two stunning campsites near high-altitude lakes. The first is near Bekaltal, a serene lake that partially freezes in winter, nestled within the forest. The main attraction is the campsite near Brahmatal itself. Here, you camp in a vast, snow-covered meadow with the legendary frozen Brahmatal lake nearby. The climb to the Brahmatal summit ridge at 12,250 feet rewards trekkers with one of the most dramatic panoramas in the Garhwal region.
Dayara Bugyal: A Vast Winter Wonderland
‘Bugyal’ means high-altitude meadow, and Dayara Bugyal is one of the most spectacular in India. In winter, these vast, rolling grasslands are covered in a thick, soft blanket of snow, turning the entire landscape into a pristine white expanse. The trek, typically starting from the villages of Raithal or Barsu, is considered relatively easy, making it ideal for beginners looking for their first snow trek experience. Campsites like Gui and Chilpada are located in clearings just below the main meadows, offering peaceful nights and stunning views. The beauty of Dayara lies in its sheer scale; walking across these endless snowfields with views of peaks like Bandarpoonch is a liberating experience.
Chopta: The Mini Switzerland of India
Known for its stunning beauty, Chopta becomes a snow-laden paradise in winter, earning its 'Mini Switzerland' nickname. It serves as the base for the trek to Tungnath, the world's highest Shiva temple, and the Chandrashila summit. While camping options are plentiful, most are organized sites in areas like Baniyakund, just below Chopta, which offer safety and amenities. These campsites are nestled in meadows and forests, often covered in deep snow from December to March. The trek to Chandrashila at nearly 13,000 feet is a highlight, providing one of the best 360-degree views of major Garhwal peaks, including Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, and Trishul. For a slightly different experience, the nearby Deoriatal campsite offers a beautiful forested setting with a lake reflecting the Chaukhamba massif.
