Beyond the Eight-Hour Rule
The message to get a full night’s rest is well-established, but many people who sleep for seven or eight hours still wake up feeling tired. A growing field of science, known as chronobiology, is providing an answer. Our bodies run on an internal 24-hour
clock, or circadian rhythm, that governs everything from hormone release to body temperature and, crucially, our sleep-wake cycle. Recent reviews and studies highlight that misaligning our sleep schedule with this natural rhythm can have significant health consequences, even if we get enough total hours of sleep. This misalignment, often called social jetlag, happens when our work or social schedules force us to sleep and wake at times that are out of sync with our internal clock.
Are You a Lark or an Owl?
Each person has a natural tendency towards a certain sleep schedule, known as a chronotype. ‘Morning larks’ feel most alert early in the day and prefer to sleep and wake early, while ‘evening owls’ peak later in the afternoon or evening and naturally sleep late. While genetics play a large role, modern life in India often forces everyone onto a single schedule. Late-night work shifts, long commutes in city traffic, and the constant glow of screens from smartphones and laptops are all powerful signals that can confuse our body clocks. This is especially true for young adults and those in high-pressure jobs, who often go to bed late and use their beds for activities other than sleep, like working or streaming content.
The Indian Health Connection
This disruption is not just a matter of feeling groggy; it has profound implications for public health in India. Several studies focused on Indian populations have linked evening chronotypes and irregular sleep schedules to serious health risks. Research shows that individuals who are ‘evening types’ are more likely to have higher blood sugar levels, increased body mass index (BMI), and poorer cholesterol profiles. One study on South Indians found that 85% of evening chronotypes were diabetic and had significantly poorer glycaemic control. With India already facing a high burden of metabolic diseases like diabetes and hypertension, understanding and addressing the role of circadian disruption is becoming increasingly vital.
The Hidden Costs of a Late Night
When your lifestyle constantly battles your internal clock, the body pays a price. Circadian misalignment is linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular problems, obesity, and even certain types of cancer. It disrupts the secretion of key hormones like melatonin (which promotes sleep) and cortisol (the stress hormone). Studies on shift workers in India, such as nurses, show that working against the natural day-night cycle can lead to abnormal blood pressure patterns, a direct risk factor for heart disease. Furthermore, poor sleep timing affects mental well-being, with many people reporting increased irritability, stress, and even symptoms of depression.
How to Reset Your Body Clock
The good news is that you can take simple, effective steps to better align your sleep with your internal rhythm. The most powerful tool is consistency. Try to wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. Another key factor is light. Get bright, natural sunlight exposure in the morning to send a strong ‘wake up’ signal to your brain. In the evening, do the opposite: dim the lights and avoid blue light from screens for at least an hour before bed. Establishing a relaxing bedtime routine, such as reading or taking a warm bath, and avoiding heavy meals, caffeine, and alcohol close to bedtime can also significantly improve your ability to fall asleep at a consistent time.
