Day 1: Journey to the Queen of Hills
Your Himalayan adventure begins with the journey to Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh. An overnight bus or an early morning drive from Delhi or Chandigarh is your best bet. The road trip itself is part of the experience, taking about 7-9 hours from Delhi as
the plains gradually give way to winding mountain roads. Upon arrival in Shimla, check into your hotel and take some time to acclimatize to the altitude. In the evening, take a leisurely stroll down the iconic Mall Road. This bustling promenade, closed to traffic, is the heart of the city. Lined with shops, cafes, and colonial-era buildings, it’s the perfect place to soak in the town's atmosphere and grab a warm meal at a local restaurant.
Day 2: Exploring Shimla's Colonial Charm
Dedicate your second day to exploring the rich heritage of Shimla. Start your morning with a walk up to The Ridge, a large open space offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Here, you'll find Christ Church, a beautiful neo-Gothic structure and one of Shimla's most famous landmarks. For a dose of history, visit the Viceregal Lodge, also known as the Rashtrapati Niwas. This magnificent building, once the summer residence of the British viceroys, offers a glimpse into India's colonial past. In the afternoon, take the ropeway or hike up to the Jakhoo Temple, dedicated to Lord Hanuman and situated on Shimla's highest peak. The panoramic city views from the top are well worth the effort.
Day 3: Adventure in Kufri
Today is for adventure and nature at the nearby hill station of Kufri, located just 16 kilometres from Shimla. Known for its stunning vistas and recreational activities, Kufri is a must-visit. You can enjoy horse riding up to Mahasu Peak for breathtaking views of the Himalayan ranges. Kufri is also home to the Himalayan Nature Park, where you can see native wildlife, including the Himalayan monal. Depending on the season, Kufri offers various activities; in summer, you can try go-karting and zip-lining at Kufri Fun World, while winter turns the landscape into a snowy playground perfect for skiing and sledging for beginners. It’s a day to embrace the playful, adventurous side of the Himalayas.
Day 4: Serenity at Naldehra and Chail
Use your fourth day to explore the serene landscapes beyond the main tourist circuit. You have a choice between two peaceful destinations. Head to Naldehra, known for its picturesque, nine-hole golf course, one of the oldest in India, surrounded by dense deodar trees. It's a perfect spot for a quiet walk and to appreciate the tranquillity of nature. Alternatively, you could take a day trip to Chail, a quiet hill station about 45 km from Shimla. Chail is famous for the Chail Palace, its royal heritage, and the world's highest cricket ground, built in 1893. Both destinations offer a peaceful retreat from the bustling crowds and a different perspective on the beauty of the region.
Day 5: One Last Look and Departure
Enjoy a final Himalayan breakfast at your hotel. Depending on your travel schedule, you might have time for some last-minute souvenir shopping at Lakkar Bazaar, famous for its wooden crafts and souvenirs. As you check out and begin your journey back, take a moment to capture the mountain views one last time. The drive down offers a chance to reflect on the beauty and peace you’ve experienced over the last few days. Whether you travel by car or bus, the descent back to the plains marks the end of your short but memorable Himalayan escape, leaving you refreshed and with lasting memories.
