A Game-Changer for Valley Travel
For decades, reaching the Kashmir Valley meant a long, arduous road journey or booking a flight. With the completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), that has changed. The Vande Bharat Express now connects Jammu Tawi directly to Srinagar,
cutting the grueling 8-10 hour road trip to a comfortable journey of under five hours. Launched in May 2026, this all-weather service glides through the stunning Pir Panjal mountains, crossing the iconic Chenab Bridge, the highest railway bridge in the world. Onboard, passengers can enjoy heated interiors and large panoramic windows, offering breathtaking views as the train makes its way through numerous tunnels and bridges, a feat of modern engineering.
Planning and Booking Your Journey
Booking your Vande Bharat journey is straightforward via the official IRCTC website. The main service, train number 26401, departs from Jammu Tawi in the morning at 6:20 AM and arrives in Srinagar around 11:10 AM. The return train, 26402, leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM, reaching Jammu by evening. Services run six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays. Fares typically start around ₹715 for AC Chair Car and ₹1,320 for Executive Chair Car. Given the train's popularity, it's advisable to book tickets well in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons like spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). Keep in mind that schedules can see minor seasonal adjustments, so always double-check the timetable before your trip.
A Classic 5-Day Itinerary from Srinagar
Upon arriving at Srinagar station, you are perfectly positioned to explore Kashmir's most cherished destinations. For a classic tour, dedicate your first afternoon to settling in with a serene shikara ride on Dal or Nigeen Lake. The next day, explore Srinagar's famed Mughal Gardens—Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Chashme Shahi. On day three, take a day trip to Gulmarg, the 'Meadow of Flowers'. It's about a 90-minute drive from Srinagar and famous for its Gondola ride, which offers stunning Himalayan views. Reserve day four for a journey to Pahalgam, the 'Valley of Shepherds'. The drive itself, along the Lidder River, is spectacular. Explore Betaab Valley and Aru Valley before returning to Srinagar in the evening. Spend your final day exploring the old city and local markets before heading to the station for your return Vande Bharat journey.
Exploring South Kashmir from Banihal
The Vande Bharat route opens up new possibilities for exploring offbeat destinations. The Banihal station, a key stop before Srinagar, serves as a gateway to South Kashmir's hidden gems. From Banihal, you can hire a local taxi to visit the beautiful Nilpal Lamber, a spot with meadows and a waterfall just 5 km from the station. The town is also a base for visiting Verinag, the source of the Jhelum River, and Kokernag with its botanical gardens. These areas are less crowded than the main tourist circuit and offer a glimpse into the tranquil life of the valley. Planning a day trip from Banihal can be a unique addition to your Kashmir itinerary.
Adventures in North Kashmir via Baramulla
The railway line extends beyond Srinagar to Baramulla, the historic gateway to the valley. Using the local train service from Srinagar to Baramulla, you can easily access the northern parts of Kashmir. Baramulla itself is a historic town on the banks of the Jhelum. From here, you are closer to Wular Lake, one of Asia's largest freshwater lakes and a paradise for birdwatchers. The town also serves as a convenient access point for those wishing to visit the shrine of Baba Reshi near Gulmarg. A trip to Baramulla offers a mix of history, spirituality, and nature, away from the more frequented tourist trails.
