A Full Restoration of Services
The Karnataka government has announced the complete restoration of jungle safari operations in both Bandipur and Nagarahole Tiger Reserves, a decision celebrated by nature lovers and the local tourism industry. This move comes after seven months of restricted
services, which were initially put in place following a surge in human-animal conflicts in areas bordering the parks in November 2025. A partial reopening occurred in February 2026, but the recent decision marks a return to full capacity. The government's approval is based on a scientific assessment of the forests' carrying capacity, ensuring that the renewed tourism is sustainable and ecologically responsible.
Your Guide to the Safari Experience
With the parks fully operational, visitors can once again book their spots on the much-sought-after jungle safaris. In Bandipur, the safari duration is typically around 2.5 hours, while in Nagarahole, it can be up to 3 hours. Safaris are conducted twice daily. The morning session usually runs from around 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM, offering a chance to see the animals at their most active. The evening safari, which starts around 3:00 PM and concludes by 6:00 PM, provides a different light and a new opportunity for sightings. Both jeep and canter (bus) safaris are generally available, operated by the Karnataka Forest Department and Jungle Lodges and Resorts.
How to Book Your Jungle Adventure
Given the high demand, especially for weekend slots, booking your safari in advance is highly recommended. The most reliable way to secure a permit is through the official Karnataka Forest Department website. Early bookings are crucial as slots, particularly for popular zones like Kabini in Nagarahole, tend to fill up fast. Travellers arriving from Bengaluru should also be mindful of the night traffic ban on National Highway 766, which passes through the Bandipur Tiger Reserve. The road is closed from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM, so plan your journey accordingly to avoid missing a pre-booked morning safari.
The Best Time for a Wild Encounter
While the parks are a year-round destination, the post-monsoon and winter period, from October to March, is often considered the best time to visit. The weather is pleasant, and the forest is lush and green after the rains. However, the summer months, from March to May, also present a prime opportunity for wildlife sightings. During this dry season, animals frequently gather around the few remaining waterholes, increasing the chances of spotting elusive predators like tigers and leopards.
More Than Just Tigers
While the magnificent Bengal tiger is the star attraction, both parks are teeming with diverse wildlife. These forests, part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, are home to large herds of Asiatic elephants, leopards, dholes (wild dogs), sloth bears, and gaur (Indian bison). Nagarahole is particularly famous for its elephant and leopard sightings. The parks also boast a rich avian population, with over 200 species recorded, making them a paradise for birdwatchers. Embracing the full spectrum of biodiversity ensures a rewarding experience, regardless of whether you spot a big cat.
