The Tamhini Ghat Drive: A Symphony of Waterfalls
Often called the quintessential monsoon road trip from Pune, the drive through Tamhini Ghat is an experience in itself. Located about 55-70 km from the city, this mountain pass connecting Pune to the Konkan region becomes a paradise of lush valleys and
innumerable waterfalls. During the peak rainy months of July and August, you don’t just see waterfalls—you drive through them. Dozens of unnamed cascades flow directly onto the road, creating a misty and magical atmosphere. Key stops include the Mulshi Dam backwaters at the start of the ghat, where streams pour into the reservoir, and the main Tamhini Waterfall (also known as Palse Waterfall), which is a popular roadside attraction. The route offers stunning views of the Kundalika Valley. Given the heavy fog and weekend crowds, an early start before 7:00 AM is highly recommended for a smoother journey.
Devkund Waterfall: The Hidden Jungle Pool
Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful waterfalls near Pune, Devkund is a pristine cascade that plunges into a turquoise pool of water. Located around 110-115 km from Pune near the village of Bhira, reaching this gem requires some effort. The journey involves a trek of about 5-6 km each way, which takes roughly two to three hours. The trail winds through a dense, green forest and involves crossing a few streams, making it a gentle adventure suitable for beginners with a reasonable level of fitness. Locally known as the "Bathing Pond of Gods," the waterfall originates from the Kundalika River and is considered sacred. Due to safety concerns during heavy rains, authorities often restrict access in peak monsoon, so it's crucial to check the latest updates before planning your trip. Many find the post-monsoon months of October and November to be ideal, as the water flow remains strong and the pool is safer for a dip.
Thoseghar Falls: A Spectacle of Roaring Cascades
For those who prefer spectacular views without a strenuous trek, Thoseghar Waterfalls near Satara is an ideal destination. Located about 140-145 km from Pune, this spot features a series of waterfalls, with the main one plummeting from a height of nearly 200 metres, making it one of the tallest in Maharashtra. The site is well-maintained, with a dedicated viewing platform that offers a safe and breathtaking vantage point of the roaring falls. The sound of the water and the sheer scale of the cascades are truly awe-inspiring, especially during the peak monsoon months from July to October. The drive to Thoseghar takes you through scenic countryside. While you cannot enter the water, the platform provides an excellent opportunity for photography and simply soaking in the power of nature. A visit can be perfectly combined with a trip to the nearby Chalkewadi Windmill Farm.
Lingmala Waterfall: The Mahabaleshwar Marvel
Situated near Mahabaleshwar, about 120 km from Pune, Lingmala Waterfall is another majestic sight worth the journey. Formed by the Venna River, the site actually features two distinct waterfalls. A smaller, lower falls is perfect for families and offers a safe area for splashing around. A further 30-minute trek leads to the main waterfall, which cascades from a height of about 500-600 feet. The walk to the viewpoints involves a fair number of stairs, which can be tiring, but the stunning panoramic views are a worthy reward. The best time to visit is during the monsoon when the falls are at their peak flow, creating a spectacular scene amidst the lush greenery of the Venna Valley. Swimming near the main fall is not advisable due to the strong currents during this season.
