What is Activity-First Planning?
Activity-first planning is a travel strategy that prioritizes what you want to do and see over where you want to sleep. Instead of starting your search by browsing hotels, you begin by creating a wish list of activities, sights, restaurants, and experiences.
Only after you know what your days will look like do you choose a 'base'—a neighbourhood or area that is most convenient for those plans. This method forces a focus on the actual experience of the trip. The accommodation becomes a functional, comfortable launchpad for your adventures, rather than the a-esthetic centrepiece that might be impractical. It’s a shift from asking “Where is a beautiful place to stay?” to “Where is the best place to stay to support the trip I want to have?”
The Pitfall of a Pretty Picture
In a hyper-visual age of social media, it's easy to be seduced by a hotel with a stunning lobby, a rooftop pool, or impeccably designed rooms. While these places are beautiful, their aesthetic appeal says nothing about their practicality. Booking based on looks alone can lead to several common travel frustrations. You might end up in a remote location, spending a significant portion of your budget and precious vacation time on taxis or complicated public transport. A cheap deal on an out-of-town hotel is often a false economy once you factor in these hidden travel costs and wasted hours. Your trip can quickly become a logistical mess, defined by long commutes rather than leisurely exploration.
Step 1: Build Your Dream Itinerary
Before you even think about hotels, open a map app and start plotting your must-dos. List every museum, park, restaurant, theatre, and specific sight you want to visit. Don't hold back; this is the brainstorming phase. Once your list is complete, start pinning each location on a digital map. This visual representation is the foundation of your plan. As you plot your points, you’ll begin to see clusters emerge. Are most of your chosen activities concentrated in a specific part of the city? Is there a particular neighbourhood that seems to be the epicentre of your interests? This map is the key to unlocking the most logical and enjoyable version of your trip.
Step 2: Find Your Geographic Centre
With your activity map in hand, it’s time to identify your ideal base. Look at the clusters of pins. Your perfect neighbourhood is the one that puts you within easy walking or public transit distance of the majority of your activities. A well-located base makes everything easier. You can pop back to the hotel for a rest midday without a 40-minute journey. Morning coffee and evening dinners are a pleasant stroll away, allowing you to immerse yourself in the local atmosphere. Consider your travel style, too. If you love bustling nightlife, choose a base in the heart of the action. If you prefer quiet mornings, perhaps a well-connected residential area on the edge of the main tourist zone is a better fit.
Step 3: Now, Choose the Hotel
This is the final step, not the first. Now that you have identified your ideal one or two neighbourhoods, you can finally start the hotel search. But this time, your search is smarter and more focused. Filter for hotels only within your chosen base area. From there, you can apply your other important criteria: budget, amenities like free breakfast or Wi-Fi, and, yes, even aesthetics. By waiting until this stage, you ensure that any hotel you choose will be, at a minimum, conveniently located. You are no longer choosing between a pretty hotel and a practical one. You are choosing the best and prettiest hotel within an already practical and desirable location, ensuring your accommodation enhances your trip instead of hindering it.
