Is This a General Offer or a Limited Promotion?
The first and most important question is to clarify the nature of the programme. There is no standing, universal 'free visa' policy for all Indian travellers to the UAE. Most of these offers are limited-time promotions sponsored by a specific entity.
For instance, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi recently launched a programme running from August to October 2026, covering the visa costs for up to 20,000 Indian tourists. However, this is not an open-door policy; it comes with strict conditions. Understanding if the offer is from an airline, a hotel, or a tourism board will help you understand the rules you need to follow. Ask your agent: “Who is sponsoring this free visa, and what are the promotion’s start and end dates?”
What Are the Exact Eligibility Requirements?
A 'free visa' is rarely free for everyone. Promotions are always targeted. For the Abu Dhabi programme, travellers must be Indian passport holders, book a return flight from India, and stay for a minimum of three consecutive nights in an Abu Dhabi hotel. Crucially, the booking must be made through a participating travel partner or online travel agency; you cannot apply for the offer independently. Other programmes, like airline-sponsored stopovers, have different rules. Etihad and Emirates, for example, offer stopover packages that can include complimentary transit visas, but eligibility often depends on having a long connection time where no shorter option is available. Ask your agent for a written list of all conditions you must meet.
Which Type of Visa is Included?
Not all visas are created equal. A 'free visa' might only be a 48-hour or 96-hour transit visa, which is great for a short stopover but not for a week-long holiday. Other promotions might cover a 14-day or 30-day single-entry tourist visa. It is essential to confirm the visa type and its validity. Find out how long you are permitted to stay in the UAE and whether the visa allows for a single entry or multiple entries. If you plan to visit a neighbouring country and return, a single-entry visa will not work. Clarify with your partner: “What is the exact name of the visa being offered, what is its duration, and is it single or multiple entry?”
Are There Any Hidden Costs?
The visa itself might be free, but the process may not be. Travel agencies charge service fees for processing applications, and these are almost never included in 'free visa' promotions. You should also inquire if the 'free visa' is tied to booking a more expensive flight, a specific hotel category, or a bundled tour package that might cost more than booking separately. The cost of the visa, around Dh285 ($77), may be absorbed by the promoter, but other costs can be inflated to compensate. Ask for a detailed cost breakdown of your entire trip, including flights, hotel, visa processing fees, and any other service charges to see where the value truly lies.
What is the Cancellation and Refund Policy?
Travel plans can change. It is vital to understand what happens if you need to cancel or postpone your trip. What is the agent’s refund policy for the package you’ve booked? Since the visa is processed as part of a package, cancelling your trip might mean losing the money you’ve paid for flights and hotels. Visa fees paid to the government are typically non-refundable once the application is processed. Ask your agent specific 'what if' scenarios: “What happens if I cancel before the visa is applied for? What if I cancel after it’s approved? Are any parts of my payment refundable?”
How Can I Verify the Visa's Authenticity?
Unfortunately, visa scams are a real risk, often involving fake websites or agents who disappear after receiving payment. A legitimate travel agent should be transparent about their process. Ask them how you can verify the status and authenticity of your visa once it is issued. Official government portals allow you to check the validity of an e-visa using your passport number and the visa number. Your agent should be able to provide you with the official application number and guide you to the correct government website to do this. Be wary of any agent who communicates only via WhatsApp, asks for payment into a personal bank account, or cannot provide a physical office address.
