from the Lakshadweep Administration before travelling. The permit system ensures that tourism remains sustainable. The good news for travellers is that the process has been streamlined significantly. As of recent updates in 2026, the administration has removed the requirement for a local sponsor and a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) for tourist applications, making direct online applications much simpler. However, the permit remains mandatory, and you can only visit the specific islands mentioned in your approved document.
Gather Your Documents First
Before you begin the online application, it’s wise to have all your necessary documents scanned and ready. This will make the process smooth and prevent your session from timing out. For Indian citizens, you will need a valid government-issued photo ID (like an Aadhaar card, passport, or Voter ID) and a recent passport-sized photograph. The photo must adhere to specific size and format requirements, typically a JPG/JPEG file under 29KB with dimensions of 150x200 pixels. Foreign nationals must have a valid passport and an appropriate Indian visa. While you no longer need a PCC, you will need to provide details of your planned itinerary, including travel dates, the islands you wish to visit, and your accommodation details.
Navigating the ePermit Portal
The entire application process is handled through the official Lakshadweep ePermit portal (epermit.utl.gov.in). The first step is to create an account by signing up with your name, email address, and mobile number. Once logged in, you will select the option to apply for a new permit and choose “Tourist” as your category. You'll then be prompted to fill in your personal details, travel dates, and the specific islands you plan to visit, such as Agatti, Bangaram, Kadmat, or Kavaratti. Carefully upload your scanned ID and photograph in the specified format. The final step involves paying the application fee of ₹50 per person and a heritage fee, which is ₹200 for adults. After payment, you will receive an acknowledgement number to track your application.
Approval, Timing, and Next Steps
You should apply at least 14 days before your planned travel date to allow sufficient time for processing and internal security verification by the Lakshadweep Police. Processing usually takes between 7 and 15 working days. You can track the status of your application on the ePermit portal using your acknowledgement number. Once approved, the permit will be sent to your registered email address. It is strongly advised to wait until you have the approved permit in hand before booking flights or making non-refundable hotel payments to avoid any financial loss. Remember to carry both a digital and a printed copy of the permit with you, as it will be checked before you can board your flight to Agatti, the main airport serving the islands.
Special Notes for Scuba Divers
Lakshadweep is a world-class scuba destination, but the activity is regulated to protect the reefs. While the general entry permit allows you access to the islands, diving activities must be done through authorized operators. Many resorts and tour operators offer integrated packages that include diving, and they can assist with logistics. For your safety, all divers are required to complete a standard PADI Medical Questionnaire. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, you may need a physician's clearance. Also, remember to plan for the mandatory no-fly surface interval after your last dive—at least 18 hours for multiple dives—before you are scheduled to fly out of Agatti.
