More Than Just a Coastal City
For years, Andhra Pradesh's tourism story was dominated by pilgrimage circuits, with millions visiting sacred sites like Tirumala but often leaving the same day. The state's extensive coastline remained a largely untapped asset. Now, Visakhapatnam, or Vizag,
is at the heart of a major policy shift to change that narrative. The city offers a unique blend of pristine beaches, lush hills, ancient Buddhist sites, and a dynamic urban core. This combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage is being leveraged to position Vizag not just as a weekend getaway, but as a destination in its own right, capable of attracting diverse tourist segments looking for more than just a single experience. In 2023, the region already accounted for nearly a quarter of the state's total tourist inflow, showcasing its existing appeal.
The Infrastructure and Connectivity Revolution
A city’s tourism potential is only as good as its accessibility. Acknowledging this, both state and central governments are pouring resources into transforming Vizag's connectivity. The most significant development is the new Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram, which began commercial operations in August 2026. Developed by the GMR Group, this greenfield airport replaces the old civil enclave at a naval airbase, removing operational restrictions and paving the way for more domestic and international flights. The first phase is designed to handle six million passengers annually. Beyond air travel, the development of a new cruise terminal under the Sagarmala project, along with improved road corridors, is set to make Vizag a major gateway to India's east coast for both leisure and business travelers.
A New Hub for Business and Events
Vizag's evolution extends beyond leisure tourism. The city is being aggressively promoted as a prime destination for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism. The state government is establishing a dedicated convention bureau in Visakhapatnam to act as a single point of contact for event organizers, simplifying everything from bidding to securing venues and permits. This strategy is backed by a surge in hospitality infrastructure, with major international hotel chains like Oberoi, Taj, Marriott, and Hilton expanding their presence. An estimated 500-600 new hotel keys are expected to be added in the near future to meet rising demand. This, combined with large-scale investments like Google's planned AI data hub, is strengthening Vizag’s profile as a significant economic and business center, which naturally fuels corporate travel.
Policy Push and Investment-Friendly Climate
The renewed focus on Vizag is a cornerstone of Andhra Pradesh's Tourism Policy 2024-29, which aims to attract ₹20,000–25,000 crore in private investment. A key move was granting official “Industry Status” to the tourism sector, which unlocks financial incentives like capital subsidies and tax reimbursements for investors. The government has described Vizag as the “crown jewel” of the state's tourism sector and is developing it on a 'Hub and Spoke' model, connecting the city to nearby attractions like the Araku Valley and Borra Caves through heli-tourism and seaplane services. Adventure tourism is also getting a boost, with new water sports facilities introduced at several beaches. These concerted efforts are designed to create a vibrant, multi-faceted tourism ecosystem with Vizag at its core.
Gaining the Competitive Edge
With these developments, Andhra Pradesh is positioning itself to compete more effectively with established tourism powerhouses like Goa, Kerala, and neighboring states. While traditionally known for religious tourism, the state is now creating a compelling alternative for travelers seeking coastal leisure, adventure, and cultural experiences. The strategy is not to imitate but to create a unique identity for Vizag, built around its blend of hills and beaches, modernity and heritage. By enhancing infrastructure and creating a diverse portfolio of attractions, Andhra Pradesh aims to increase the length of tourist stays and capture a larger share of the domestic tourism market, where it already ranks among the top states. The rise of Vizag is central to this ambition, providing a flagship destination that can anchor the state's entire tourism economy.
