In Tenet, time doesn’t just jump; it inverts. This means objects and people can have their entropy reversed, causing them to move backward through time while the world moves forward. It’s a mind-bending concept on paper and a monumental challenge to portray
on screen. Director Christopher Nolan, known for his commitment to practical effects, decided against simply reversing the film. Instead, he tasked his stunt team, led by coordinator George Cottle, with creating a physical language for inversion. The goal was to make audiences feel the disorienting reality of two timelines colliding in a single, tangible moment.
The Art of the Reverse Punch
The most iconic example is the hallway fight at the Oslo freeport, where the Protagonist (John David Washington) battles a mysterious, inverted soldier. On first viewing, it’s a chaotic and strange brawl. On re-watch, knowing the soldier is a future, inverted version of the Protagonist himself, the scene transforms into a masterpiece of choreography. Nolan had the stunt team and Washington learn to perform the entire fight sequence both forwards and backwards. This meant one actor would perform their moves traditionally, while the other executed a perfectly memorized reverse version of the fight, like a dance learned in another dimension. The process involved weeks of intense rehearsal, as actors had to unlearn their natural instincts for movement and reaction to sell the illusion.
Orchestrating Temporal Chaos
The complexity scales up dramatically in the film’s larger set pieces, particularly the highway chase and the final battle’s “temporal pincer movement.” This tactic involves one team moving forward in time and another inverted team moving backward over the same ground. The result is a battlefield where explosions implode, buildings re-form, and soldiers march in opposite temporal directions. Filming this required meticulous planning, with stunt performers and vehicle drivers needing to execute precise movements in reverse. The stunt team filmed themselves performing actions, reversed the footage, and then studied it to mimic the unnatural-looking physics of inverted motion. This dedication to practical execution, with minimal CGI, grounds the film's most fantastic ideas in a startlingly real texture.
Rewiring the Actor's Brain
For the actors, performing in Tenet was less about acting and more about rewiring their brains. John David Washington has spoken about the immense challenge of learning to fight, speak, and move in reverse. It wasn't just about doing things backward; it was about making those backward movements look intentional and natural from the character’s inverted perspective. Christopher Nolan and his stunt coordinators even brought in dancers to help explore how the human body could fluidly perform these reverse motions. Every punch thrown by an inverted character had to feel like it was being caught by their opponent, and every step backward had to look like a step forward from their point of view.
