A Record Number of Special Services
To combat the seasonal surge in passengers, Indian Railways is operating a record number of special train trips. An extensive plan covering the period from April 15 to July 15, 2026, includes a total of 18,262 special trips by 908 trains. This large-scale
deployment is specifically designed to clear long waiting lists and provide more confirmed tickets for travellers during this peak window, which often includes school holidays and festivals. The move represents a significant increase in capacity aimed at making journeys smoother for millions.
Focus on High-Demand Corridors
These additional services are not random; they are strategically deployed on the nation's busiest and most sought-after corridors. Key railway zones have ramped up their operations, with Central Railway, East Central Railway, and North Western Railway leading in the number of additional trips. This ensures enhanced connectivity between major metropolitan hubs like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad, and destinations in Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Heavy footfall is expected at major stations, and the railways have planned for crowd management measures to handle the influx.
What This Means for Budget Travellers
While the headline numbers are impressive, the real benefit for budget travellers lies in the composition of these trains. Most special services are configured with a mix of classes, including a significant number of Sleeper and General coaches. This ensures that travellers on a tight budget have more opportunities to find an affordable, confirmed seat. The primary objective of these services is to increase the availability of confirmed tickets and reduce the anxiety associated with waitlisted bookings. The sheer volume of extra trips directly translates to more available berths in the non-AC classes, which are the backbone of budget travel in India.
Targeted Services for Festivals
Beyond the general summer rush, Indian Railways has also announced dedicated services for specific events in July. A significant number of special trains are being run to accommodate the rush for the Rath Yatra in Puri, Odisha, with over 300 additional services planned. Similarly, with the Onam festival approaching in August, more than 100 special trains have been announced for Kerala to help manage the festive travel demand. These event-specific trains provide crucial, targeted relief on routes that see a massive, temporary spike in passenger numbers.
How to Book and Plan Your Trip
To take advantage of these extra services, passengers are advised to book through official channels. The IRCTC website and the official mobile app are the most reliable platforms for booking tickets on these special trains. It is important to note the train numbers, as special services often have a different numbering scheme. Bookings for these trains typically open 60 days in advance, so planning ahead is still crucial, even with the extra capacity. For last-minute plans, the Tatkal booking window remains an option. Travellers should regularly check the IRCTC portal for newly notified trains, as services are being announced in a phased manner.
