A New Eye In The Sky
In a significant leap for national security, ISRO is enhancing India's ability to monitor its borders with unprecedented detail and frequency. At the heart of this development is the launch of new Earth Observation Satellites (EOS), specifically designed
for persistent surveillance from a geosynchronous orbit. A key satellite in this initiative, EOS-05 (also known as Gisat-1A), is slated for an early September launch. Unlike previous satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) that passed over an area for only brief moments, this new generation of satellites will be positioned approximately 36,000 km above the Earth. From this vantage point, they can hover over a fixed location, matching the Earth's rotation to provide continuous, 24/7 monitoring of the Indian subcontinent. This capability marks a strategic shift from capturing snapshots to maintaining a constant, real-time vigil over areas of interest.
What 'Persistent Surveillance' Means
The term 'persistent surveillance' is a game-changer for intelligence and security operations. Previously, most imaging satellites were in polar orbits, meaning they could view a specific location on the ground only when their orbit passed overhead, leading to gaps in coverage that could last hours or even days. The new geosynchronous imaging satellites eliminate this crucial time lag. By remaining stationary relative to the Earth's surface, EOS-05 can repeatedly observe the same region, allowing security forces to detect changes and movements almost as they happen. This 'Hawkeye in the sky' is equipped with high-resolution multispectral imagers capable of capturing detailed pictures, providing data for both military and civilian use, including disaster management and environmental monitoring. The ability to track events as they unfold offers a powerful advantage in dynamic border situations.
Overcoming Critical Border Challenges
India's land borders with neighbours like China and Pakistan stretch across some of the world's most inhospitable terrain, including rugged Himalayan mountains and dense forests. Physical patrolling in these areas is often hampered by extreme weather, high altitudes, and the sheer scale of the territory. These gaps can be exploited for infiltration, smuggling, and unauthorised troop movements. ISRO's satellite boost directly addresses these vulnerabilities. The new systems, including satellites with synthetic aperture radar, will provide all-weather, day-and-night imaging capabilities, overcoming limitations like cloud cover or darkness that affected older optical satellites. This ensures that the nation's defence forces have a clear and consistent picture of border activities, regardless of environmental conditions, enabling them to deploy resources more effectively and respond to threats faster.
A Broader Strategic Upgrade
This new capability is part of a larger, ambitious plan to bolster India's space-based military assets. Reports indicate that India is fast-tracking a program to launch over 50 new surveillance satellites to create a multi-layered surveillance architecture. This initiative, known as Space-Based Surveillance Phase-III, aims to dramatically shorten the time between observing an event and acting on it, a crucial factor in modern conflicts. The program involves collaboration between ISRO and private sector companies, signalling a new era in India's space and defence ecosystem. By developing a robust constellation of satellites across different orbits, India aims to reduce its reliance on foreign assets for critical intelligence and establish comprehensive surveillance over its land borders, coastlines, and the wider Indian Ocean Region.
