A Partnership for Pioneers
In a significant move for Indian science, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance space medicine. The primary goal is to ensure
the health and safety of astronauts on long-duration missions, including the upcoming Gaganyaan human spaceflight and the future Bharatiya Antariksh Station. This collaboration brings together India's foremost space agency and its premier medical institution to study the unique medical challenges posed by the extreme environment of space, such as microgravity, radiation, and isolation.
The Unique Stresses of Space
The human body, adapted to Earth's gravity, undergoes significant changes in space. Astronauts can lose bone density up to ten times faster than someone with osteoporosis on Earth. They also experience muscle atrophy, cardiovascular changes, and shifts in their immune system. Solving these problems is critical for future exploration, from developing exercise regimens that work in zero gravity to creating shielding against cosmic radiation. The joint ISRO-AIIMS research will focus on key areas like human physiology, behavioural health, nutrition, and musculoskeletal changes to develop protocols and countermeasures for astronauts.

Similarly, the telemedicine systems developed to monitor an astronaut's health from millions of miles away can be adapted to connect specialists in urban hospitals with patients in distant villages, a field ISRO has already contributed to.

Technologies like MRI and CT imaging, wearable health monitors, and even advanced water purification systems have their roots in space programmes. The ISRO-AIIMS partnership is poised to continue this legacy. Research into preventing muscle wasting in astronauts could lead to new treatments for bed-ridden patients or the elderly. Developing autonomous diagnostic systems for spacecraft could lead to AI-powered health tools that assist doctors on Earth.
