Indian Airports Go Family-First
Major Indian airports are at the forefront of this family-friendly revolution. Recently, Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport were ranked among the world's top five most family-friendly airports.
Hyderabad was lauded for its dedicated kids' play areas, family rooms, complimentary baby strollers, and even therapy dogs to ease travel anxiety. Bengaluru has similarly invested in children's play zones and robust baby care facilities. Delhi International Airport has also launched its 'Family@DEL' initiative, a comprehensive program offering dedicated entry gates, family check-in counters, and priority security lanes for those travelling with children. These efforts show a clear commitment to making the airport experience more inclusive and comfortable for passengers of all ages.
Streamlining the Security Squeeze
One of the most daunting parts of air travel for parents is the security check. Juggling bags, strollers, and anxious children can be a significant challenge. In response, airports are introducing dedicated family security lanes. This concept, part of initiatives like 'Families on the Fly' in the U.S., provides more space and time for families to get through screening without the pressure of holding up other passengers. At Delhi Airport, the Family@DEL program ensures a priority security process at dedicated zones. These lanes are staffed with officers who can offer extra assistance, helping to fold strollers, manage belongings, and navigate the screening of items like baby food and milk, making the process significantly less stressful.
Comfort and Privacy for Little Ones
Finding a quiet, clean space to care for an infant's needs is a top priority for parents. Modern airports have moved beyond basic changing tables. Today, you can find well-equipped baby care rooms that offer privacy and comfort. These dedicated spaces, available at airports like Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad, often include comfortable chairs for feeding, diaper changing stations, and access to hot and cold water. Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has multiple baby care rooms across its terminals. Many airports also provide complimentary strollers that can be collected upon arrival and used until the boarding gate, easing the burden of carrying tired toddlers through long terminals.
Play Areas That Delight
“Are we there yet?” is a question that starts long before the plane takes off. To combat pre-flight restlessness, airports are designing creative and engaging play areas. These are not just small corners with a few toys anymore. Mumbai's Terminal 2 features a jungle-themed indoor play area, while Bengaluru's Terminal 2 has a well-designed space with soft, padded flooring for safety. Hyderabad Airport also features dedicated kids' play areas to keep young travellers entertained. These zones allow children to burn off energy in a safe and fun environment, making the wait for boarding more pleasant for everyone. Some airports even get creative with interactive displays and climbing structures, turning the terminal into a mini-adventure park.
Beyond the Essentials
The focus on family travel now extends to a wider range of needs. Many airports are introducing sensory rooms, which provide a calm and quiet environment for children with autism or other sensory processing needs who might find the bustling terminal overwhelming. Airports like Delhi are also deploying 'Family Assistance Buddies'—specially trained staff to guide and support families throughout their journey. Additionally, food courts are adapting, with some offering designated family seating areas and special kids' menus. These thoughtful additions demonstrate a deeper understanding of the diverse challenges families face while travelling.
