Culinary Convenience Is a Must
Food plays a central role in any travel experience, and for Indian travellers, it’s a top priority. According to a 2026 Agoda report, “breakfast included” is the second most used search filter, accounting for 14% of all filter activity. This highlights
a preference for convenience and value right from the start of the day. The importance of food extends beyond breakfast, with “dinner included” also ranking among the top ten filters. An on-site restaurant is a major draw, with one survey indicating that 83% of Indian travellers consider it a key requirement. This focus on in-house dining ensures that travellers have reliable and accessible meal options, catering especially to families and those with specific dietary needs like vegetarianism.
Reviews and Photos Don't Lie
In the digital age, social proof is paramount. Before committing to a booking, Indian travellers meticulously scan online reviews and guest photos. Recent feedback provides a real-world glimpse into a hotel’s condition, trumping polished marketing materials. Travellers look for consistent comments on cleanliness, staff behaviour, and the functional state of amenities. According to Agoda's 2026 data, 'Review scores of 7 and above' is a top search criterion, making up 13% of all filter activity. This reliance on peer experiences helps manage expectations and avoid unpleasant surprises, ensuring the hotel lives up to its promises. Nearly 75% of travellers specifically check reviews that mention cleanliness and room amenities before making a decision.
Flexibility in Booking and Payment
Plans can change, and modern travellers demand policies that accommodate unpredictability. “Free cancellation” and “pay at the hotel” options are among the most frequently used search filters for Indians. These features reduce the friction and stress associated with booking, offering a safety net in case of last-minute changes. Furthermore, seamless and flexible 24-hour check-ins are a high priority for 81% of travellers, accommodating late arrivals and providing convenience. This desire for flexibility shows that travellers value peace of mind as much as a good price, wanting to avoid financial loss if their itinerary is disrupted.
Location, Safety, and Connectivity
A hotel’s location is more than just an address; it’s the logistical hub of the trip. Indian travellers prioritise properties that are well-connected to major attractions, transport links like metro stations, and essential services. For solo travellers, especially women, safety is a non-negotiable factor, influencing their choice of neighbourhood. Beyond physical location, digital connectivity is also crucial. Reliable, high-speed Wi-Fi is no longer considered a luxury but a basic necessity for both business and leisure travellers to stay connected and productive. A location score of 9 or above is a popular filter, indicating a strong preference for prime spots.
Comfort and In-Room Amenities
While the destination is important, the hotel stay itself is increasingly becoming part of the experience. Indian travellers are looking for comfort and thoughtful in-room amenities that make a stay relaxing. A room with a nice view is desired by 83% of travellers, while practical features like power sockets near the bed (76%) and user-controlled air conditioning (73%) are also highly valued. Relaxation amenities such as swimming pools and bathtubs also feature in the top 10 search filters, showing a clear desire for a restorative and enhanced stay experience. These small details contribute significantly to overall satisfaction, making the room a comfortable sanctuary after a day of exploring.
Value Beyond Just the Price Tag
While budget is always a consideration, Indian travellers are increasingly focused on 'value for money' rather than just the lowest price. This concept, termed “smart luxury,” involves seeking better stays and experiences without overspending. They are willing to pay extra for services that add significant convenience or comfort. The decision is based on a holistic assessment of what is included in the price—amenities, meals, location, and the overall quality of the experience. Travellers want to feel that their money is well-spent, ensuring the hotel delivers on comfort, service, and reliability.
