An Adventure Through the Clouds
This isn't just a way to get from point A to point B; it’s the centerpiece of any Sri Lankan hill country itinerary. The roughly seven-hour journey climbs from the historic city of Kandy into misty mountains, past cascading waterfalls, and through the heart
of the island's lush tea estates. For young travelers, it offers an unbeatable combination of stunning landscapes, incredible photo opportunities, and a chance to connect with fellow adventurers from around the globe. The vibe is social, the views are epic, and the experience is unforgettable.
An Important 2026 Route Update
Before you plan your trip, be aware of a significant change. Due to track maintenance that began in late 2025, the most scenic part of the tourist train route no longer departs directly from Kandy. The primary tourist services now run from Ambewela to Ella. This is actually a blessing in disguise. Travelers typically take a car or taxi from Kandy to Ambewela, a journey of a few hours that allows for amazing stops at places like Ramboda Falls and a local tea factory, which you would otherwise miss. From Ambewela, you board the train for the world-famous final leg of the journey into Ella.
Booking Your Golden Ticket
Booking tickets for this popular route requires some advance planning, as they sell out quickly. You have a few options. The official Sri Lanka Railways website is the primary source, with reservations typically opening 30 days in advance. However, many international travelers find third-party booking sites like 12Go.Asia easier to navigate, though they may include a small service fee. It is highly recommended to book reserved seats to avoid standing for hours in a crowded carriage. Due to high demand, booking as soon as your travel date is available is the best strategy.
Choosing Your Class and Seat
The trains offer three main classes. First Class provides air-conditioned cabins with comfortable seats, but the windows do not open, which limits the classic photo opportunities. Second and Third Class are the most popular choices for travelers seeking the iconic experience. These carriages have open windows and doors, allowing you to feel the breeze and take those famous photos hanging safely from the doorway. Second Class offers slightly more comfortable seating than Third, but both provide an authentic and lively atmosphere. For the best views between Nanu Oya and Ella, try to secure a seat on the left side of the train (when facing the direction of travel).
The Journey Itself: What to Expect
Once aboard, settle in for a visual feast. The train moves slowly, giving you plenty of time to soak in the scenery. You'll pass through charming hill stations like Nuwara Eliya, often called 'Little England'. The landscape transforms from dense forests to rolling hills blanketed in a carpet of green tea bushes. One of the highlights is crossing the magnificent Nine Arch Bridge, an architectural marvel nestled in the jungle just before Ella. The train often slows down here, providing a perfect photo op. Vendors will hop on and off at various stops selling local snacks like spicy vada and fresh fruit, adding to the authentic experience.
Arrival in Ella and Beyond
Your adventure doesn't end when the train pulls into the station. Ella is a backpacker's paradise, a small town with a relaxed vibe and plenty of things to do. After settling in, you can hike to the top of Little Adam's Peak for panoramic views, or walk along the tracks to see the Nine Arch Bridge from below—a perspective just as stunning as the one from the train. The town is filled with cozy cafes and restaurants, making it the perfect place to unwind after your long journey and share stories with other travelers.
