Deconstructing the 'Free' Visa Offer
To boost tourism from a key market, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has initiated a programme that covers the full cost of a UAE entry visa for eligible Indian travellers. It is important to understand that this is not
a blanket visa-free entry policy for all Indian passport holders. Instead, it is a targeted tourism promotion where the visa cost, approximately Dh285, is waived for travellers who book a specific type of holiday package. The initiative is a pilot programme running for a limited time and has a cap on the number of visas it will cover.
Key Eligibility Criteria for Indian Travellers
To qualify for this visa cost waiver, Indian travellers must meet a specific set of conditions. The offer is not available for independent visa applications and is exclusively tied to holiday packages. The essential requirements are: holding a valid Indian passport and departing from India; booking the trip through a participating travel partner or an approved online travel agency; the package must include a stay of at least three consecutive nights in an Abu Dhabi hotel; and a confirmed return flight to India must be part of the booking. A short layover or a one-night stop will not qualify.
The Programme's Window and Capacity
This promotional offer is time-sensitive and has a finite capacity. The programme runs from August 1, 2026, to October 31, 2026. During this three-month period, the initiative aims to cover the visa costs for up to 20,000 travellers in its initial phase. Given the high demand for travel from India, this cap could be reached before the October deadline. Therefore, prospective travellers are advised to confirm the offer's availability with their travel agent before finalising their bookings to avoid disappointment.
How to Secure Your Free Visa
The process to avail this offer is managed entirely through travel providers rather than government portals. The first step is to find a participating travel agency or online travel platform that is part of this DCT Abu Dhabi initiative. When booking a qualifying package that meets the three-night stay and return flight criteria, the travel partner will handle the visa processing. They will either process the visa through a DCT-appointed destination management company (DMC) where the cost is covered directly, or they will be reimbursed by DCT Abu Dhabi for the visa fee. For the traveller, the visa fee is simply removed from the total package cost.
Other Visa Options for Indians
For those who do not qualify for this specific promotional offer, there are other established visa routes for entering the UAE. Indian citizens who hold a valid visa or residence permit from the United States, United Kingdom, or the European Union can obtain a 14-day visa on arrival for a fee. Standard tourist e-visas, typically for 30 or 60 days, remain available for all other travellers. Additionally, travellers transiting through Abu Dhabi for a short period can apply for a 48-hour or 96-hour transit visa, usually through their airline, though these are not free. It's also worth noting that the UAE often waives visa fees for children under 18 travelling with their parents during the summer months, which can offer additional savings for families.
