A Landmark Review on Protein
Scientists recently conducted a sweeping analysis, reviewing over 350 previously published studies on the relationship between protein, aging, and metabolism. Published in the journal Cell Press Blue, this comprehensive review challenges some of the current
thinking around high-protein diets, suggesting that for many people, optimal intake might be lower than current trends suggest. The goal was to move past single studies and get a bigger picture of what decades of research tell us about this essential nutrient. The findings don't offer a single magic number, but instead highlight that the ideal amount of protein is highly dependent on individual factors, primarily your age and how active you are.
For Sedentary Adults, Less Can Be More
A surprising takeaway from the review is that for many relatively sedentary adults, consuming more protein than needed could have negative health consequences. Lower protein intake was linked across many studies to better metabolic health, reduced inflammation, and improved cellular maintenance. Some human trials even showed that reducing protein intake led to weight loss and better blood sugar control, even when participants ate more calories overall. This contradicts the popular idea that packing in protein is always the best strategy for health and weight management. Researchers suggest that for this group, the standard recommendation of 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight is likely sufficient to prevent deficiency and support basic functions.
Ageing and Protein: A Shifting Requirement
As we get older, our bodies change, and so do our protein needs. After the age of 40 or 50, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass in a process called sarcopenia. To counteract this, experts recommend that older adults increase their protein intake. Several sources suggest a target of 1.0 to 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight for healthy adults over 65. Some international study groups recommend even higher amounts, up to 1.5 grams per kilogram, especially for those with chronic illnesses, to preserve muscle mass, maintain strength, and reduce frailty. This increased need is due to a phenomenon called "anabolic resistance," where muscles become less efficient at using protein to build and repair tissue.
Activity Level: The Great Multiplier
Physical activity is the other major factor that dictates protein requirements. It's clear that active individuals need more protein than their sedentary counterparts to repair and build muscle tissue. People who exercise regularly may need about 1.1 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. For those engaged in serious strength training or preparing for endurance events, this number can climb even higher, to a range of 1.2 to 1.7 grams per kilogram. Athletes may even require up to 2.2 grams per kilogram to maximize gains in lean muscle mass. The research highlights that active bodies are better at using this extra protein, insulating them from some of the negative metabolic effects that excess protein might have on a sedentary person.
The 'Limits' of Our Knowledge
The 350-study review also underscores the limits of our current understanding. While the trends for age and activity are clear, the science is still evolving. For example, there's debate on how protein should be distributed throughout the day. Some newer studies suggest that spreading intake evenly across meals, including breakfast, may help with weight management by reducing hunger. There's also more to learn about the specific types of amino acids—the building blocks of protein—and their distinct roles in health and aging. The review doesn’t provide a single, universal answer but instead points toward a future of more personalised protein recommendations based on an individual's complete lifestyle, not just one isolated factor.
