A Major Boost in Speed and Power
The most significant upgrade is a massive increase in the system's capacity, directly targeting the congestion that plagues Tatkal bookings. The old platform could process around 32,000 bookings per minute, which was often not enough to handle the rush.
The new system is built to handle over 1.5 lakh bookings per minute, a nearly five-fold increase. In addition, the enquiry capacity has been boosted tenfold, from handling 4 lakh enquiries per minute to over 40 lakh. This means everything from checking seat availability to getting PNR status updates will be significantly faster, reducing the chances of website crashes and slowdowns during peak hours.
A Simpler, Cleaner Interface
Responding to years of user feedback, and even direct complaints from students to the Railway Minister, the new website features a cleaner, more intuitive design. Unnecessary pop-ups, flashing advertisements, and distracting graphics have been removed to create a more streamlined experience. Crucially for Tatkal bookers, the frequency of CAPTCHA verification, a common point of frustration and delay, has been significantly reduced. The goal is to make the journey from searching to booking as seamless and quick as possible.
New Features for Smarter Booking
Beyond raw speed, the updated platform introduces several passenger-friendly features that have long been standard on airline booking portals. A new fare calendar will allow users to compare ticket prices across different dates, perfect for those with flexible travel plans. Passengers will also be able to specify their preferred seats during booking, rather than having them assigned randomly. Another time-saving change is the unified seat availability display, which shows seats across all classes (Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, AC 2 Tier, etc.) on a single screen, eliminating the need to search each class separately.
Enhanced Security and Accessibility
To ensure fairness and transparency, especially for Tatkal tickets, new security measures are being integrated. Aadhaar-based OTP authentication will become mandatory for booking online Tatkal tickets, a step aimed at curbing the use of fake profiles and bulk booking by unauthorised agents. To further level the playing field, authorised ticketing agents will be restricted from booking any Tatkal tickets for the first 30 minutes of the window opening. The platform is also becoming more accessible, with support for multiple Indian languages and the integration of concession bookings for Divyangjan, students, and patients onto the main site.
How to Prepare for the New System
To take full advantage of these upgrades, users should take a few preparatory steps. First, ensure your IRCTC account is linked and verified with your Aadhaar, as this will be mandatory for Tatkal bookings. Before the booking window opens, log in to the IRCTC website or app and update your 'Master List' with the details of all potential passengers. This allows you to pre-fill passenger details with a single click, saving crucial seconds. Finally, familiarise yourself with the new layout and have your payment details (UPI, saved cards, or wallet) ready to go for a faster checkout. While the system is more powerful, being prepared remains the key to a successful Tatkal booking.
