The New Rule: 30 Days, Visa-Free
The Thai government has officially confirmed that it will continue to offer visa-free entry to Indian passport holders. However, the biggest change is the duration of the stay. Under the new rules approved by the Thai cabinet on July 14, 2026, the maximum
period for a visa-exempt stay has been set at 30 days. This is a reduction from the previous 60-day period that had been in effect. For the vast majority of Indian tourists, this 30-day window is more than sufficient for a typical holiday, whether it’s for island hopping in Phuket, shopping in Bangkok, or exploring the temples of Chiang Mai. The decision provides a clear and stable policy for those planning their trips.
Putting an End to Confusion
This announcement brings welcome relief after a period of significant confusion. In May 2026, the Thai government had considered a proposal to significantly reduce its list of visa-exempt countries, which could have ended the visa-free arrangement for India. This uncertainty reportedly led to a decline in travel bookings from India, a crucial market for Thailand's tourism industry. Realising the impact, Thai authorities have opted for a middle path: retaining the convenient visa-free access for Indians but standardizing the stay period to 30 days. This move is seen as a direct response to feedback and a way to reassure one of its largest tourism markets.
Why Was the Change Made?
The adjustment from a 60-day to a 30-day stay is part of a broader strategy by the Thai government to balance tourism promotion with tighter immigration controls. Officials had expressed concerns that the generous 60-day visa-free period was being misused in some cases, with instances of visitors overstaying or engaging in illegal work. By standardizing the stay to 30 days, authorities aim to curb these issues while still accommodating genuine tourists. According to Thailand's Tourism Minister, the 30-day period aligns better with the actual travel patterns of most Indian visitors, whose average stay is typically much shorter.
How This Affects Your Holiday Plans
For most Indian travellers, the impact of this change will be minimal. If you are planning a vacation of one to four weeks, the new 30-day visa-free stay is perfectly adequate. You can continue to book your flights and accommodation without the need to apply for a visa in advance. However, the key difference affects those planning longer trips. If your itinerary involves staying in Thailand for more than 30 days, you can no longer rely on the visa exemption scheme. You will now need to apply for a proper tourist visa through a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate before you travel, which typically allows for a 60-day stay.
Your Pre-Travel Checklist
While the visa process is simplified, you should still have all your documents in order for a smooth entry. First, ensure your passport has at least six months of validity from your date of arrival in Thailand. You must also have a confirmed return ticket showing you intend to leave the country within the 30-day period. It is also highly recommended to carry proof of accommodation for your stay. Immigration officials may also ask for proof of sufficient funds for your trip. Finally, be prepared to fill out the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before you land.
