Purity and Quality Assurance
When you buy physical gold, especially jewellery, its purity can be a major concern. While hallmarking has improved standards, the quality can vary between jewellers, and issues like under-karating are not unheard of. Gold Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs)
solve this problem entirely. Each ETF unit is backed by physical gold of at least 99.5% purity, held in secure vaults by the fund custodian. This guarantees you are investing in high-quality gold without needing personal verification, offering peace of mind that your investment's value is tied directly to the price of pure gold.
The Burden of Storage and Safety
Physical gold comes with the tangible satisfaction of ownership, but also the very real costs and risks of storage. Whether you use a bank locker, which involves annual rent, or store it at home, the risk of theft is always present. Gold ETFs, being in a dematerialized or electronic form, eliminate these issues. The units are held securely in your Demat account, just like shares. This not only removes the risk of theft but also saves you the recurring expense and hassle of securing a physical asset.
Transaction Costs and Hidden Charges
The price you pay for physical gold is rarely just the market rate. When buying jewellery, making charges can range from 8% to over 25%, a cost you never recover upon selling. Furthermore, a 3% Goods and Services Tax (GST) is levied on all physical gold purchases. In contrast, Gold ETFs do not attract GST at the point of purchase. While they do have a small annual expense ratio (typically 0.5% to 1%) and minor brokerage fees, these are often significantly lower than the making charges and taxes associated with physical gold, making ETFs a more cost-effective investment vehicle.
Liquidity: Cashing In Your Investment
Liquidity refers to how quickly you can convert an asset into cash without losing value. Gold ETFs are highly liquid; you can buy or sell them instantly on the stock exchange during market hours at transparent, real-time prices. Selling physical gold, however, can be a slower process. It often involves finding a willing buyer, verifying purity, and negotiating a price, which may be lower than the prevailing market rate. This makes ETFs a superior choice for investors who value the flexibility to enter and exit their investment with ease.
Taxation: A Decisive Factor
Tax implications are a critical differentiator for investors in India. While the long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax rate for both is 12.5% (without indexation), the holding period to qualify for this rate differs significantly. For Gold ETFs, gains become long-term after just 12 months. For physical gold, you must hold the asset for over 24 months for the gains to be considered long-term. If you sell before these periods, the gains are considered short-term and are taxed at your applicable income tax slab rate. This one-year advantage makes Gold ETFs significantly more tax-efficient for medium-term investors.
Minimum Investment and Accessibility
Investing in physical gold typically requires buying at least one gram, which can be a substantial initial outlay. Gold ETFs, on the other hand, offer greater flexibility. One ETF unit usually corresponds to one gram of gold, and you can buy as little as a single unit to start your investment journey. This low barrier to entry makes it easy for new or small-scale investors to gain exposure to gold prices without needing a large lump sum, allowing for systematic and disciplined investing through a Demat account.
