Your Gateway: The ICRB Written Test
The journey to becoming a Scientist/Engineer 'SC' at ISRO begins with a written examination conducted by the ISRO Centralised Recruitment Board (ICRB). This test is the primary screening method used to shortlist candidates for the subsequent interview
stage. The selection process has sometimes involved direct shortlisting based on GATE scores, but the written test remains a common and crucial route for aspirants across disciplines like Mechanical, Electronics, and Computer Science. The entire process, from the written test to the final interview, is designed to identify individuals with strong fundamental knowledge and technical acumen. The final selection typically gives equal weightage, 50% each, to both the written test and the interview performance, making a strong start essential.
The Two-Part Exam Structure
The written test, often a Computer-Based Test (CBT), generally lasts for two hours and is divided into two distinct parts. Part 'A' is the core of the exam, focusing on your specific engineering discipline. This section contains 80 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), carrying one mark each. Part 'B' is designed to assess your general aptitude. It consists of around 15 to 20 questions covering logical reasoning, numerical ability, and abstract thinking. While Part A tests your deep technical knowledge, Part B ensures you have the essential problem-solving skills required in a dynamic research environment.
The Challenge of Negative Marking
A critical aspect of the ISRO exam strategy is understanding the marking scheme. For Part A, the discipline-specific section, there is a penalty for incorrect answers. For every wrong answer, one-third (1/3) of a mark is deducted. This makes it crucial to avoid guessing and only attempt questions you are confident about. A wrong answer not only denies you a mark but also reduces your total score. However, reports suggest that Part B, the aptitude section, typically does not have negative marking, allowing for a more flexible approach to answering those questions.

For Mechanical Engineering, key areas include Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Strength of Materials, Theory of Machines, Production Engineering, and Heat Transfer. Aspirants in Electronics and Communication Engineering should focus on topics like Electronic Devices, Analog and Digital Circuits, Signals and Systems, Control Systems, Communications, and Electromagnetics. For Computer Science Engineering, the syllabus revolves around Data Structures, Algorithms, Operating Systems, Database Management Systems, Computer Networks, Digital Logic, and Theory of Computation. A strong command of core engineering subjects from your undergraduate curriculum is non-negotiable.
From Written Test to Interview
Performing well in the written test is your ticket to the final stage: the personal interview. Based on the written test marks, candidates are shortlisted for the interview in a ratio of approximately 1:5. The interview is a comprehensive assessment carrying 100 marks, designed to evaluate your technical knowledge, communication skills, and general awareness related to your field. The panel, often comprising senior scientists, will delve into your favorite subjects and assess your fundamental understanding. Final selection is based on a combined score, with the written test and interview performance being equally important.
