Why Apollo's Wardrobe Won't Work
The iconic images of Apollo astronauts hopping and bounding across the Moon are etched in history. While groundbreaking for their time, those suits were stiff, cumbersome, and severely limited mobility. Astronauts struggled to bend over, pick up rocks,
or perform dexterous tasks. This wasn't a major issue for the relatively short excursions of the 1960s and 70s. However, the Artemis program has far more ambitious goals. NASA is targeting the Moon's South Pole, a region of extreme temperatures, treacherous terrain, and long, dark shadows, with the aim of establishing a long-term human presence. To do that, astronauts need to be more than just visitors; they need to be field geologists, construction workers, and scientists. This requires a complete overhaul of their most essential piece of equipment: the spacesuit.
Introducing the AxEMU: Built for a New Frontier
Enter the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or AxEMU. Developed by commercial partner Axiom Space, with design input from Italian fashion house Prada, this next-generation suit is a leap forward in engineering and design. It builds upon years of NASA's own research on a prototype called the xEMU but brings a commercial-sector dynamism to the project. The AxEMU is designed specifically to meet the complex challenges of the lunar south pole. It can withstand extreme temperatures, including the frigid cold of permanently shadowed regions for at least two hours, and allows for spacewalks lasting eight hours or more. Unlike the custom-fitted suits of the Apollo era, the AxEMU is a modular platform designed to fit a wide range of body types, accommodating at least 90 percent of the US male and female population. This inclusive and adaptable design is crucial for the diverse crews of the Artemis generation.
The Tech Behind a Better Moonwalk
The key upgrade is mobility. The AxEMU incorporates innovative joints in the arms, legs, and even the gloves, allowing astronauts to walk more naturally, bend, kneel, and twist with far greater ease. This enhanced range of motion is critical for collecting samples, setting up equipment, and navigating the rugged lunar landscape. The suit also features a rear-entry hatch, making it easier to get in and out of compared to the two-piece suits currently used on the International Space Station. Inside, an advanced life support system includes a regenerable carbon dioxide scrubbing system and an upgraded liquid cooling garment to keep astronauts comfortable during strenuous activity. Externally, the helmet includes high-definition cameras, bright lights for working in shadows, and advanced visor coatings to improve vision in the harsh, low-angle sunlight of the lunar pole.
A New Commercial Model for Space
The development of the AxEMU also highlights a major shift in how NASA operates. Instead of building the suits entirely in-house, the agency awarded a contract to Axiom Space to provide moonwalking services. This partnership leverages the innovation and speed of the commercial sector, with Axiom taking responsibility for the design, production, and certification of the suits. NASA's investment of over $228 million in the task order is part of a broader strategy to foster a robust commercial space economy. While Axiom is leading the charge for the Artemis III moonwalk, NASA has also engaged with other companies like Collins Aerospace for developing suits for the International Space Station and future missions, creating a competitive environment to drive innovation.
