The UPI and Credit Card Revolution
For years, the convenience of UPI came at a cost: zero rewards. Since most UPI transactions are direct bank-to-bank transfers, they don't earn you the points or cashback that credit card swipes do. However, a crucial change has unlocked a powerful new
way to earn. The Reserve Bank of India now permits linking RuPay credit cards to UPI applications. This means you can scan any merchant QR code and pay using your credit card's credit line, not your bank balance. Every eligible transaction, from the smallest purchase to a significant bill payment, now becomes an opportunity to accumulate valuable reward points.
Choosing the Right Card Is Key
Not all credit cards are created equal in this new ecosystem. The first rule is that only RuPay-network credit cards can be linked to UPI for these payments; Visa and Mastercard do not currently support this feature for QR code payments. To maximise travel benefits, you should look for specific types of RuPay cards. Co-branded airline cards (like those with Vistara or Air India) or cards with strong travel partners are ideal. These cards allow you to convert the points you earn from spending into air miles, often at a favourable ratio. Cards like the Tata Neu Infinity HDFC Bank Credit Card or the Scapia Federal RuPay Credit Card have become popular as they offer rewards on UPI spends that can be channeled towards travel.
How to Set It Up and Get Started
The process is surprisingly straightforward. First, you need a RuPay credit card that offers good rewards. Once you have the card, open your preferred UPI app—such as Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm. In the app's settings, you'll find an option to 'Add Credit Card' or 'Link RuPay Credit Card'. Select your bank, and the app will automatically detect your eligible RuPay card. After confirming, you'll set a UPI PIN specifically for your credit card transactions. From that point on, whenever you scan a merchant QR code, you will see your linked credit card as a payment option alongside your bank accounts. Simply select it, enter your PIN, and the payment is made, earning you points in the process.
Strategies to Maximise Your Earnings
To truly make this system work for you, a strategic approach is necessary. The goal is to channel as much of your regular, planned spending as possible through this method. Start by using your UPI-linked credit card for all daily expenses like groceries, dining, and transportation. Instead of paying utility bills, phone recharges, or insurance premiums from your bank account, use the UPI credit option to earn points on these larger, recurring payments. Many cards offer accelerated rewards on specific categories, so it pays to know your card's benefits and use it for those specific spends. By consistently routing your everyday budget through the card, you can passively accumulate a significant number of points over the year.
From Points to Planes: The Final Step
Accumulating points is only half the battle; redeeming them effectively is what gets you the free flight. Once you have a substantial balance, you'll need to convert your bank's reward points into airline miles. This is typically done through your bank's net banking portal, where you can transfer points to partnered airline loyalty programs like Air India's Flying Returns or Vistara's Club Vistara. It's crucial to understand the transfer ratio—for example, two bank points might equal one air mile. After the miles are in your frequent flyer account, you can use them to book 'award flights' directly on the airline's website. While you may still have to pay for taxes and fees, the main fare is covered by your miles.
Important Things to Keep in Mind
While this strategy is powerful, it requires financial discipline. The entire system of earning rewards is worthless if you don't pay your credit card bill in full and on time each month. The interest charges, which can be as high as 40-48% annually, will quickly erase the value of any rewards you've earned. Also, be aware of annual fees on premium travel cards and ensure you're earning enough rewards to justify the cost. Finally, note that some transactions, like wallet loads, rent payments, or transfers to individuals, may not be eligible for reward points, so always check your card's terms and conditions.
