A perfect storm of factors is putting upward pressure on the fares for your daily ride. The most significant is the fluctuating cost of fuel. Rising prices for petrol, diesel, and especially CNG directly increase the operating costs for drivers. When
drivers have to spend more on fuel, that cost is eventually passed on to the passenger. Another major factor is demand, which typically surges in mid-August due to a combination of monsoon unpredictability and the beginning of the festive season. Heavy rains can reduce the number of vehicles on the road, while festivals increase the number of people travelling for shopping and family visits. This classic supply-and-demand gap gives ride-hailing apps the green light to implement surge pricing.
Breaking Down the 10–20% Hike
So, what does a 10–20% increase actually look like in your wallet? Let's take a typical auto or bike taxi ride that costs ₹100. A 10% hike means you'll now pay ₹110, while a 20% increase brings the fare to ₹120. For a longer cab ride that usually costs ₹350, the new fare could be anywhere from ₹385 to ₹420. These seemingly small daily increases add up quickly. A daily commuter spending ₹200 on transport could see their monthly bill rise by ₹400 to ₹800. This is compounded by the fact that auto unions in several cities, including Pune and Delhi, have been demanding revisions to the base fares set by the government, citing inflation and higher maintenance costs. In Pune, for instance, a proposal is in place to raise the minimum fare from ₹25 to ₹30, a 20% jump on its own.
Who Decides the Final Fare?
The price you pay is often determined by two different systems. For traditional autorickshaws, fares are supposed to be regulated by the government's Regional Transport Authority (RTA) in each district. These bodies set a minimum fare and a per-kilometre rate, which is what the meter should reflect. However, drivers often argue these rates are not revised frequently enough to keep up with costs, leading to refusal to ply or demands for a flat rate. For app-based aggregators like Ola, Uber, and Rapido, the system is based on 'dynamic pricing'. Their algorithms constantly adjust prices based on real-time demand, driver availability, traffic, and even the weather. While the government has set a cap on how much they can 'surge' the price, these platforms have a lot of leeway in determining the final cost you see on your screen.
Can You Travel Smarter and Save Money?
While you can't control the fares, you can adopt smarter strategies to lessen the blow. The most effective tactic is to avoid travelling during peak hours when demand and prices are at their highest. If your schedule allows, leaving for work 30 minutes earlier or later can make a significant difference. Always compare fares across multiple apps before booking; a few seconds of checking can reveal a much cheaper option. For shorter distances, consider walking or using public transport like buses and the Metro for a portion of your journey, using an auto or cab only for the final leg. In some cities, commuters are increasingly opting for buses for short trips as auto fares become prohibitive. Finally, check if any of the apps are offering subscription passes or special offers that could lock in lower rates.
