To understand why humidity is such a challenge, we first need to appreciate how our bodies brilliantly cool themselves down. When we exercise or get hot, our internal temperature rises. The body's primary response is to sweat. Millions of sweat glands
release perspiration onto the skin. But it's not the sweat itself that cools you; it's the evaporation. As the liquid sweat turns into water vapour, it takes heat away from the body, a process that effectively lowers your skin and core temperature. Think of it as your own personal, highly efficient air-conditioning system, designed to maintain a stable internal climate even when you're generating lots of heat. In dry conditions, this system works beautifully, allowing heat to escape efficiently.
How Humidity Throws a Wrench in the Works
The monsoon's high humidity is the enemy of this cooling process. Humidity is simply the measure of moisture already present in the air. When the air is saturated with water vapour, as it is during a humid monsoon day, there's very little room for more. Consequently, the sweat on your skin has nowhere to go; it can't evaporate effectively. Instead of disappearing into the air and taking your body heat with it, the sweat just sits on your skin or drips off, leaving you feeling sticky and uncomfortable without providing much cooling relief. This breakdown in your body's primary cooling mechanism is why a 30-degree day with high humidity can feel far more oppressive than a 35-degree day in dry heat.
The Internal Struggle: What's Happening Inside
When evaporation is hindered, your body enters a state of stress. Since it can't cool down efficiently, your core temperature starts to rise. To compensate, your body doubles down on its efforts. It tries to cool itself by pumping more blood to the skin's surface, which puts extra strain on your heart, causing your heart rate to increase. This diversion of blood flow means less oxygen-rich blood is reaching your working muscles. The combination of a rising core temperature, increased cardiovascular strain, and less oxygen for your muscles results in a much higher perceived effort. That walk that feels easy on a dry day now feels like an uphill battle, not because you're less fit, but because your body is working significantly harder just to stay cool.
Smart Strategies for Monsoon Exercise
Acknowledging the physiological challenge of humidity doesn't mean you have to abandon your walks until winter. It just means you need to be smarter about them. Start by adjusting your expectations; you may not be able to walk as fast or as far as you normally would, and that's okay. Timing is crucial: opt for early mornings or later evenings when the temperature and humidity are typically lower. Hydration is non-negotiable. Drink water before, during, and after your walk to replenish the fluids lost through excessive sweating. Your clothing choice also matters. Wear lightweight, breathable fabrics that wick moisture away from the skin, rather than cotton which tends to hold onto sweat and create a layer of insulation. Most importantly, listen to your body. If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or excessively fatigued, it's a sign to stop, rest, and cool down.
